Judging by the “self-help” offered to working women, we are, as a category, case studies in failure. The history of such books and articles dates back to at least 1873, when Harvard professor Edward Clarke warned that a college education would make a woman’s brain too heavy and her womb too barren. Centuries later, cover stories like “The Myth of Work-Life Balance,” “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” and, of course, “Are You Mom Enough” emphasize women as a social project. Whether it’s why we aren’t marrying or why we can’t have it all, the cycle of trend pieces turned best-selling books remains invested in corrective measures.

Grace Snyder's lively eyes gaze out of her 1903 wedding photograph. There's an astonishing hat atop her head and a tiny, cat-got-the-cream smile on her lips. She perches just behind her cowboy husband, her clasped hands resting near his left shoulder. Her story, in many respects, mirrors Nebraska's history in the late 19thcentury and much of the 20th century. Born in 1882, reared in a sod house on a Custer County homestead and married to a Sandhills cowboy and rancher, she recounted her pioneer life in the 1963 book "No Time on My Hands," as told to her daughter, author Nellie Snyder Yost. Along the way, she became nationally known for her quilting expertise. Two of her quilts were designated as among the 100 best 20th-century quilts by Quilters Newsletter Magazine in 1999. She was named to the National Quilters Hall of Fame in 1980, two years before her death at 100. Now Grace Snyder is the focal point of an innovative new history curriculum developed jointly by NET Learning Services, the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska State Historical Society. Called "Tiny Stitches, Big Life," the online multimedia project uses Snyder's quilts and her life experiences to bring pioneer history to life for Nebraska elementary school students. It is the first module of a larger project, "Stories of Nebraska Quilters," with plans to develop additional material about other Nebraskans who are remembered through their quilts.

I found this article, Subsidy For Cupid: Request for Salary Differential for Married Teachers Is Unsound, in the December 10, 1948, edition of The Wisconsin State Journal.
The first line reads, “The board of education has been asked to establish a permanent salary differential of $600 annually for instructors who are married.” This had me thinking that the proposed salary adjustment would remove $600 a year for married teachers; you know, because married women are therefore little women who do not really need a salary anyway. I was born on April 21st. Here in Indonesia, that’s Hari Kartini (Kartini’s Day), a celebration of the day Kartini was born. Who is Kartini? Her full name is Raden Ajeng Kartini, and we celebrate her because she is a heroine who fought for woman to be educated and to be able to go to school.

Dr. Baker was without a doubt the leading expert of the time on children's health. In 1916 the dean of the New York University Medical School asked her to lecture the students on the subject. She agreed, on one condition -that he allow her to enroll and attend classes. He refused; women weren't allowed at his college. So she told him to find someone else. But there wasn't anyone who knew as much as Baker did. He finally gave in, and because he allowed her to attend the college, he had to open the campus to other women as well. In 1917 she became the first woman to receive a doctorate in public health from the school.
