Lorraine Hansberry (1965)

Lorraine Hansberry (1965) | Herstory | Scoop.it

Lorraine Hansberry was just 34 when she died. And though her life was brief, her writings on race in America left a decades-long impact.

Born on Chicago’s South Side, an area of the country as segregated as some parts of the American South, Ms. Hansberry was raised in a socially conscious household by parents (Carl and Nannie) who were active in the struggle for civil rights. Her father, a wealthy real estate broker, fought Chicago’s restrictive housing covenants (agreements made by realtors throughout Chicago not to sell property in certain neighborhoods to black families), His fight went to the U.S. Supreme Court where in Hansberry v. Lee (1940), the justices sided with Mr. Hansberry declared the covenants unconstitutional.

Women - Especially Lesbians- Are Shallow Money Sucking Beasts Says President of Marriage Policy

Women - Especially Lesbians- Are Shallow Money Sucking Beasts Says President of Marriage Policy | Herstory | Scoop.it

Just a few days before Women’s Equality Day, the President of the Center for Marriage Policy, David R. Usher, made a very bold statement, accusing women, especially lesbians, of being shallow, money-sucking beasts who desire to enslave men.  His article in Renew America on August 21 has triggered a landslide of reactions from many people, including the LGBTQ community, wondering which dense brain cell he could have pulled his theories out of.

According to David Usher, same sex marriages (especially between women), if allowed to spread across the nation, will spur a mass enslavement of men.  How will this occur?  Apparently, lesbian women are primed to get themselves pregnant outside of their partnership by unsuspecting straight and even gay males, who they will then demand child-support from, raping the tax-payers to support their “sinful” lifestyle.  He even goes so far as to suggest that single mothers would marry each other in order to collect double child-support and cause an economic slavery to occur for heterosexual men everywhere.

Lily Tomlin, Jane Wagner May Get Married After 42 Years Together | Herstory | Scoop.it

Actress Lily Tomlin and her partner, writer Jane Wagner, may finally get married after 42 years together now that same-sex marriage is legal.

Tomlin told E! News that she and Wagner are "thinking" about getting married now that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has been ruled unconstitutional and Proposition 8 has been struck down. The women, who met in 1971 and started dating shortly after, didn't think they would see such a milestone in their lifetime.

[This] is what happened when a bunch of RadFems righteously took over the offices of the Ladie’s Home Journal because it was a vector for promoting false stereotypes about women. Protesting negative stereotypes of cisgender women in the media has a long and proud tradition among feminists.

In Lilli Vincenz’s papers, a trove of gay rights history

In Lilli Vincenz’s papers, a trove of gay rights history | Herstory | Scoop.it

History is written by the victors, but also by the scrapbookers, the collectors, the keepers, the pack rats. By those who show up, at the beginnings of things and with the right technology. History sometimes comes in pieces. It needs to be reassembled. Pasted and coaxed. Sometimes the finished product still has holes.

In one corner of the climate-controlled manuscript division, on a series of otherwise empty shelves, sits Lilli Vincenz’s unprocessed collection. ...

Twelve boxes. Cream-colored. Heavy. Inside: meticulous fragments of the gay rights movement of the latter half of the 20th century. Political pamphlets, sociological surveys, photographs and obituaries. Diaries of a young woman who was nervous about going into her first gay bar but whose Arlington living room later became the default place for gay women to feel at home.

Isle Of Man Lesbian Couple Can't Rent The House They Wanted Because Of Their Sexual Orientation

Isle Of Man Lesbian Couple Can't Rent The House They Wanted Because Of Their Sexual Orientation | Herstory | Scoop.it

Following a discriminatory act based on their sexual orientation, a lesbian couple of Isle of Man wishes an anti-discriminatory law for LGBTQ people.

The landlord refused the rental agreement with Kara Izzard and Laura Cull because they are lesbians.

They have had then the bad surprise to discover that there is no law in Isle of Man to protect them in this kind of situation whereas civil unions and adoption are possible for same-sex couples.

"I was so shocked to hear this and felt sick, said Cull.

"I didn't know where to go or what to do as I didn't have a legal leg to stand on so after speaking with my partner Kira we thought that the only thing we could do was to share our story with as many people as possible and try and raise awareness that on this beautiful island that we call home we can still be treated this way."

It's not really lesbian when they're being paid to pose. How many women became lesbians for hire?
