On 17 April 2024, UNESCO convened the Public Seminar on the “Digital Futures of Education”. Attended by some 300 participants in-person and online, the Seminar provided a platform to engage with national experts piloting the Open School initiative in various countries and to explore strategies to steer the human-centred approach to the use of digital technology, especially artificial intelligence, in education.

What images come to your mind when you think of Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Popular illustrations include human-like robots, or a brain intertwined with chips and wires. However, these images and metaphors do not accurately reflect what AI is. The field of AI encompasses a wide range of techniques and methods that perform functions we may not typically associate with it, such as facial recognition, personalized news feeds on social media, customized suggestions and advertisements, route planning (e.g., Google Maps), and search engines (e.g., Google Search, which uses AI to improve accuracy and relevance of search results). Generative AI is an umbrella term for any AI system that can generate content--such as images, texts, audio and codes-based on the data on which the GPT-based Large Language Model (LLM) is trained (Bender et al., 2021; Chiang, 2023). Much of the Worldwide Web on the Internet is the core dataset of current LLMs, which are then fed additional selective data to tune their responses for particular purposes.

Employers, on the other hand, have started to use micro-credentials in their hiring procedures. In a recent study, 5,000 university students, recent graduates and employers across 11 countries were surveyed by Coursera, a leading micro-credential provider, in collaboration with Repdata and Dynata, two market research companies.
It was revealed that 72% of employers tend to employ a candidate who holds a micro-credential. Similarly, 90% of students and recent graduates agree that micro-credentials enable them to stand out to potential employers.
Several global companies have indeed already started to hire candidates who have micro-credentials rather than a university degree. In an interview he gave to Auto Bild, Elon Musk noted that “there’s no need even to have a college degree at all” to work for Tesla, a leading electric car manufacturer.

Recent advances in generative AI have not led to a massive rise in student cheating. But fixating on cheating may cause its own problems.

With the weekly drumbeat of generative AI advancements and corporate leaders signaling the need for their organizations to harness the power of AI, larger questions are emerging for these same executives to address.
In addition to the ethical challenges that AI presents for their customers, employees, and society, companies must grapple with how AI will fundamentally shift their operating model, including the workforce. Almost two-thirds (65%) of American executives believe generative AI will have a high or extremely high impact on their organization in the next three to five years, but 60% say they are still one to two years from deploying their first GenAI solution, per a recent KPMG survey.
