BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE –
The Miraculous Web of Life Sustains ALL Species on Planet Earth – Healthy Ecosystems, Healthy Humans. WITHOUT NATURE WE DO NOT EXIST. PERIOD.  To the degree Nature is sick, so are we.  We humans must reintegrate into the greater web of life as a species within it and not separate from it, by returning to respect and restoring balance and harmony to that which supports all life on this planet ... Nature ... #GDP should be replaced by #EcoEconomics ... Putting front and center the concerns for how we are destroying and objectifying the natural world for profit  #Conservation #Ecosystems #Wildlife #Forests #Environment #Biodiversity #Ecoeconomics #CSR #GDP #Anthropocene

Pay More Attention to Forests to Avert Global Water Crisis, Researchers Urge | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it
More than 7.5 billion humans currently occupy Earth together with an estimated three trillion trees, and both of these populations require water. The growing human population and climate change are exacerbating a looming global water crisis that could potentially be averted, if humans paid more attention to the links between forests and water.

▶ SAVING LIVES, LIVELIHOODS AND LIVES

By Harold E. Varmus, Director of the U.S. National Cancer Institute; and Robert D. Hormats, Under Sectary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment

Tragically—and to the detriment of all of us—Earth’s biodiversity is disappearing at an alarming rate. This is due to factors such as deforestation, environmental degradation, and habitat destruction from agriculture, settlement, and other uses; pollution; climate change; and chronic over-exploitation or poaching of fish and wildlife species. Scientists estimate that the planet is losing species at a rate 1,000 to 10,000 times above the rate of species extinction that would occur normally without human activity. Particularly disheartening is the fact that, in many cases, we are losing species before we even know of them or know how they fit into our shared planet.... http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2013/04/22/saving-lives-livelihoods-and-life/

The emerging holistic “One Health” movement explicitly recognizes the inextricable connections between human, animal, and ecosystem health, and is leading not only to new scientific research but also to projects that help people rise out of poverty, improve their health, reduce conflicts with wildlife, and preserve ecosystems, such as Bwindi’s tropical montane forest... http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0501-nicole-sri-ehp-one-health.html

OSLO (Reuters) - May 27, 2013

-▶ DECLINE IN BIODIVERSITY OF FARMED PLANTS AND ANIMALS GATHERING PACE. A decline in the diversity of farmed plants and livestock breeds is gathering pace, threatening future food supplies for the world's growing population, the head of a new United Nations panel on biodiversity said on Monday...

Zakri said there were 30,000 edible plants but that just 30 crops accounted for 95 percent of the energy in human food that is dominated by rice, wheat, maize, millet and sorghum....

He said it was "more important than ever to have a large genetic pool to enable organisms to withstand and adapt to new conditions." That would help to ensure food for a global population set to reach 9 billion by 2050 from 7 billion now.... http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/27/environment-food-idUSL5N0E80Q420130527

Letting Biodiversity Get Under Our Skin - The Benefits of Biodiversity in Our Homes

Letting Biodiversity Get Under Our Skin - The Benefits of Biodiversity in Our Homes | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

March/April 2013 - UTNE READER

Contrary to conventional wisdom, an overemphasis on cleanliness may be hindering the benefits of biodiversity in our homes.

We live at the crossroads of three global megatrends, three barreling and intertwined juggernauts of modernity. The first is the massive migration of humanity to the world’s cities. By 2050, two-thirds of all humans on Earth will live in urban areas....

The second is the loss of biodiversity. Species are disappearing, both from the places where we live and from the earth as a whole...

And then there’s the third trend—the one that, at first glance, seems not to belong with the others. The prevalence of allergies and chronic inflammatory diseases among urban populations in developed countries has skyrocketed in recent years....

Why Biodiversity Loss Deserves as Much Attention as Climate Change | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

Biodiversity loss is probably a challenge that is often ignored as climate change looms. Currently the world is losing species at a rate that is 100 to 1000 times faster than the natural extinction rate, further, it is currently seeing the sixth mass extinction.

Commodifying and Privatising Nature: RIO+20 and the greenwashing of the global economy

Commodifying and Privatising Nature: RIO+20 and the greenwashing of the global economy | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

The focus on technologies is problematic because of the types of controversial new technologies that are promoted, including biomass incineration, synthetic biology, nanotechnology, etc. Nuclear and GMOs are not explicitly endorsed, but would fit with the approach.

The market-based approach has been heavily criticised by NGOs as it would mean assigning private property rights to nature, commodifying and privatising nature. Leaving nature to the market would undermine the opportunities of communities and states to protect the commons. Also the bitter lessons from the carbon trading debacle seem to be entirely ignored when UNEP proposes tradeable biodiversity credits. The UNEP reports exposes a misguided belief in markets, which is astonishing after the financial crisis. It is as if that example of the chronic failure of deregulation and market-based approaches had never happened.

"The Last Orangutan Eden" ~ Full Episode | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

                                           A LOVELY WATCH

                        "THE LAST ORANGUTAN EDEN" (53:10)

                                                 PBSNature

Ecologist Chris Morgan travels to the jungles of Northern Sumatra to document the work being done to save its population of wild orangutans. Asia’s most intelligent ape once roamed across the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java, but today, fewer than 7,000 Sumatran orangutans remain in the wild. The film cites rapid deforestation — clearing the land for vast palm oil plantations — as the chief reason for the species’ declining population. But as Morgan shows, conservationists are trying to reverse that trend by teaching orphaned orangutans the survival skills they’ll need for release back into the jungle. He also accompanies researchers deep into a remote and protected peat swamp forest to study wild orangutans up close to learn about their culture and behavior.

The Guardian, July 10, 2017

EARTH'S SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION EVENT IS UNDER WAY, SCIENTISTS WARN

The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,

A “biological annihilation” of wildlife in recent decades means a sixth mass extinction in Earth’s history is under way and is more severe than previously feared, according to research.

Scientists analysed both common and rare species and found billions of regional or local populations have been lost. They blame human overpopulation and overconsumption for the crisis and warn that it threatens the survival of human civilisation, with just a short window of time in which to act.

THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION IS UPON US

CAN HUMANS SURVIVE?

-▶ Are we in the first act of a mass extinction that will end in the death of millions of plant and animal species across the planet, including us? Proponents of the “sixth extinction” theory believe the answer is yes.

Five mass extinctions have nearly wiped out life on earth. As Annalee Newitz writes in her new book, the sixth is coming... http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2013/05/06/the-sixth-mass-extinction-is-upon-us-can-humans-survive.html

Interview With Elizabeth Kolbert, Author @ElizKolbert

IN THE WORLD'S "SIXTH EXTINCTION": ARE HUMANS THE ASTEROID? Elizabeth Kolbert is the author of the new book The Sixth Extinction. It begins with a history of the "big five" extinctions of the past, and goes on to explain how human behavior is creating this sixth one — including our use of fossil fuels and the effects of climate change.

"We are effectively undoing the beauty and the variety and the richness of the world which has taken tens of millions of years to reach," Kolbert tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "... We're sort of unraveling that. ... We're doing, it's often said, a massive experiment on the planet and we really don't know what the end point is going to be." http://www.npr.org/2014/02/12/275885377/in-the-worlds-sixth-extinction-are-humans-the-asteroid

Call of Life: Facing the Mass Extinction is the first feature documentary to investigate the growing threat to Earth’s life support systems from this unprecedented loss of biodiversity. Through interviews with leading scientists, psychologists, anthropologists, philosophers, and indigenous and religious leaders, the film explores the causes, the scope, and the potential effects of the mass extinction, but also looks beyond the immediate causes of the crisis to consider how our cultural and economic systems, along with deep-seated psychological and behavioral patterns, have allowed this situation to develop, continue to reinforce it, and even determine our response to it.
Call of Life tells the story of a crisis not only in nature, but also in human nature, a crisis more threatening than anything human beings have ever faced before. http://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/call_of_life_facing_the_mass_extinction_2010/

That’s not even counting the ones threatened by habitat eradication, toxins, and other plagues we have wrought on those with whom we share our home.
Solving these problems will take a global village. Every sector has some role to play, including the private sector, which has until recently been cast primarily as the problem, not part of the solution. http://www.takepart.com/article/2014/05/16/endangered-species-day-everyone-has-role-play

The challenge of putting Brazil’s forests in good hands | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

 (02/28/2013) MongaBay

People often associate Brazil with its forests. It’s no wonder given that nearly 60% of the country’s territory is covered by forest and it holds about one-third of the world’s remaining tropical rainforests. You might assume that a country like this would care about educating people to sustainably manage this precious heritage. Loss of bees and wild pollinators serious threat to crop yields, study finds - | BIODIVERSITY IS LIFE – | Scoop.it

Feb 28, 2013 - Guardian Environment

Wild bees and other insects twice as effective as honeybees in producing seeds and fruit on crops.

The decline of wild bees and other pollinators may be an even more alarming threat to crop yields than the loss of honeybees, a worldwide study suggests, revealing the irreplaceable contribution of wild insects to global food production. ...trucking in managed honeybee hives did not replace wild pollination when that was lost, but only added to the pollination that took place.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/feb/28/wild-bees-pollinators-crop-yields

These elders of the forest do many things that smaller, younger trees cannot; for example, providing homes for many types of animals, providing space for other plants to grow in tropical rainforests and producing large amounts of seeds that serve as food for other animals and replenish tree populations, according to the study, published today (Dec. 6) in the journal Science. ▶  The current situation as far as orangutans and rainforests are concerned is critical. The ever-increasing demand in developed countries for palm oil and timber is decimating the rainforests at a terrifying rate, and consequently its orangutan population and all life within the forests as well. If nothing is done to halt this devastation, the orangutan could be facing extinction in the wild within the next 10 yearshttp://www.opf.org/

▶  DEFORESTATION AND FOREST HOLOCAUST
The statistics paint a grim picture. According to the World Resources Institute, more than 80 percent of the Earth’s natural forests already have been destroyed. Up to 90 percent of West Africa’s coastal rain forests have disappeared since 1900. Brazil and Indonesia, which contain the world’s two largest surviving regions of rain forest, are being stripped at an alarming rate by logging, fires, and land-clearing for agriculture and cattle-grazing.

Fires raging in an Indonesian swamp forest may have killed a third of the rare Sumatran orangutans. About 200 still live there. Only 12,267 hectares (30,311 acres) of Tripa’s original 60,000 hectares (148,260 acres) of forest remain. The rest has been broken up and degraded as palm oil companies drain the swamp and terminate the life of the forests.

WHERE IS REDD? .- The United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries

The blatant and criminal disregard for international agreements and treaties by the PALM OIL INDUSTRY  http://rspo.org is creating ECOCIDE throughout the world's rainforests, destroying all life within the forests, disposing native peoples from their lands and turning forest people into slaves.  The "Green-Washing" is deplorable and reprehensible. Glaringly obvious are their lies-for-profit public relations campaigns.  Their latest pr spin "Sustainable palm is good for environment, and business revenues - World Wildlife Fund report" http://ow.ly/a6X0U and raises serious questions about the integrity of the WORLD WILDLIFE FUND SEE: "The Pact with the Panda Part 1" - YouTube http://ow.ly/a6XFT

This Corporate rush to destroy our ecosystems for logging, agriculture and biofuels, palmoil may boost their quarterly bottom lines but will leave us bereft of the natural forests and all life within them.  I cannot imagine how many thousands of interdependent species are suffering and dying by the hand of their bulldozers.  Some will be lost forever

Biodiversity crisis: Habitat loss and climate change causing 6th mass extinction : scientists

Scientists meeting at the University of Copenhagen have warned that biodiversity is declining rapidly throughout the world, describing the loss of species as the 6th mass extinction event on the earth. The world is losing species at a rate that is 100 to 1000 times faster than the natural extinction rate, with the challenges of conserving the world's species larger than mitigating the negative effects of global climate change.

Biodiversity preservation can provide critical services to the poor.

The sixth great mass extinction is underway, and because of the threat it poses to global biodiversity, it is as great a threat to human well-being as climate change. The causes of this extinction event are quite clear: humans are out-competing all other species for scarce resources on a finite planet.
