The Beard Tax | Inherited Values

The Beard Tax | Inherited Values | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

A beard tax was instituted in 1705: men who wished to keep their beard could pay a tax, otherwise men would have to shave. Men who paid the tax were given a proof-of-payment token to show they had made their payment.

Stella?!? STELLA! | Inherited Values

Stella?!? STELLA! | Inherited Values | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

"This Friday, Stack’s Bowers Galleries will be selling a rare gold coin that invites a strong Stanley Kowalski imitation to say its name. The “Stella” was a ‘pattern coin’, a sample design minted in its intended form for the purpose of evaluating its monetary usage."

Wire Money of Earth and Elsewhere | Inherited Values

Wire Money of Earth and Elsewhere | Inherited Values | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Coin-grading firm helped bring order to a free-for-all industry

Coin-grading firm helped bring order to a free-for-all industry | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

As rare coins began to appreciate in value in the late 1970s and early '80s, collectors say, their hobby evolved into an investment opportunity. Even then, coins were assigned grades based on their condition on the same 70-point scale, but as the stakes rose, scams spread. Many dealers gave coins higher grades than they merited so they could sell the coins for more than their worth.
