What this means is that anyone from anywhere will be able to access the metaverse and interact with others. There will be no barriers to entry and everyone will be on an equal playing field.
This is in contrast to the traditional internet composed of many different silos. For example, you have the U.S. internet, which is different from the Chinese internet, which is different from the Russian internet. The profound difference lies in regulatory environment, censorship, and data privacy. All these factors make it very difficult for people from different parts of the world to connect with one another. Most Metaverse business projects will be dead by 2025
McKinsey forecasts market value of $5 trillion by 2030, Citi says up to $13 trillion, but Canalys doesn't agree
CANALYS CHANNELS FORUM The metaverse is a solution looking for a B2B problem – that problem being how to help Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg drum up billions of dollars in revenues – and it's going to fail in the not-too-distant future.
That is if you believe the good folk at Canalys, who are seemingly already buffing a gravestone for Zuck's version of the internet that we recently pointed out nobody really wants.
"Is the metaverse the next digital frontier or an overhyped money pit?" asked Matthew Ball, chief analyst at Canalys, at the company's Channels Forum in Barcelona.
"Tens of billions of dollars have already been invested, costs and delays to Meta's own progress is a barometer. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/topic/21st-century-innovative-technologies-and-developments/?&tag=Metaverse

The Register has reported from Gartner's Symposium event in Australia, where the intraverse was described as, "an interactive space that melds an intranet and a metaverse".
Gartner reportedly encouraged attendees to not "think of a metaverse as a single thing to build", but instead "a collection of techs such as augmented reality to be used as a training or collaboration environment, or a way to add AI avatars as a customer service option". The metaverse has drawn hype in recent months, with companies like Meta and Ralph Lauren rushing to get their foot in its virtual door. But cybercrime in the real world is already becoming more rampant. Check Point, a cybersecurity firm, reported a 50% increase in overall attacks per week on corporate networks last year compared with 2020. As businesses rush to plant their flag in the metaverse, not all may realize the full dangers of this new world, says Prabhu Ram, head of the industry intelligence group at CyberMedia Research. Awareness around the Metaverse has exploded over the past two years. A survey from Wunderman Thompson Intelligence, with respondents ages 16 to 65, shows awareness grew by 131% between Q3 2021 and Q2 2022.
This monumental change is a signal to enterprise companies that 2023 is their year to get ahead of the curve, develop innovative programs, test their efficacy, and launch new products and solutions.
As the new year approaches, we asked two of Virbela’s co-founders, Alex Howland, Ph.D., and Sheldon Brown, to predict the future of the Metaverse. Here are some of their responses. What exactly is the Metaverse? And is it really that new?
This talk will explore our emotional connections to cyberspace, our feelings of presence and immediacy in online environments, and what this means for the intensity of our experiences, good and bad. As technology promises ever more immersive, embodied experiences involving 360 degree vision, touch, and even taste, how might this merging of cyber and physical affect our lives? Anyone who has been paying attention, however, will have realized that these visions often differ greatly. While Meta focuses on creating virtual reality environments, companies like Microsoft and Nvidia are developing metaverse environments for collaborating and working on digital projects. At the same time, those who believe the future of the internet is decentralized and built on blockchain are experimenting with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to enable ownership of digital assets and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) designed to bring digital democracy to the virtual worlds we inhabit. According to Gartner, by 2026 30% of companies worldwide will have meta-ready products and services. The convergence of new technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are enabling companies to not only simplify business processes and improve decision making, but revolutionise the ways customers can interact and experience products and services. While there is plenty of debate on the social and legal aspects of the metaverse, these new immersive worlds are turning virtual experiences into products and opening up new business opportunities. THE TROUBLE WITH THE METAVERSE Innovators are diving into a new and immersive virtual space, but with new technology comes new threats. We bring forward possible problematic issues that metaverse pioneers should be wary of.
What is the metaverse? Download Metaverse or Metaworse? Cybersecurity Threats Against the Internet of Experiences Right now, there is no definitive answer. There are plenty of differing opinions about what the metaverse is and how it fits into the bigger picture of the internet. But the metaverse is still in the early days of development, and many companies are creating new technologies to carve out their nook in this immersive virtual landscape.
For now, we can define the metaverse as a cloud distributed, multi-vendor, immersive-interactive operating environment that users can access through different categories of connected devices (both static and mobile). It uses Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies to provide an interactive layer on top of the existing Internet. As proposed, it is an open platform for working and playing inside an extended reality environment, and it will also be a communications layer for smart city devices.
However, given the changing circumstances, we fully expect our definition to evolve as the metaverse concept evolves. Of course, this uncertainty makes securing the environment much more complicated.

But what if, instead of thinking of the metaverse as a set of interconnected virtual places, we think of it as a communications medium? Using this metaphor, we see the metaverse as a continuation of a line that passes through messaging and email to “rendezvous”-type social apps like Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and, for wide broadcast, Twitch + Discord. This is a progression from text to images to video, and from store-and-forward networks to real time (and, for broadcast, “stored time,” which is a useful way of thinking about recorded video), but in each case, the interactions are not place based but happening in the ether between two or more connected people. The occasion is more the point than the place. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/topic/21st-century-innovative-technologies-and-developments/?&tag=Metaverse

Two of the biggest names in entertainment are coming together to create a virtual space aimed at kids, through a new partnership between Fortnite developer Epic Games and Lego. “We are excited to come together to build a space in the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining, and made for kids and families,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in a statement.
Details are scarce — and the concept of a metaverse remains a murky one — but the companies say that whatever it is they end up building will be designed as a family-friendly virtual space from the beginning. “The Lego Group and Epic Games will combine their extensive experience to ensure that this next iteration of the internet is designed from the outset with the wellbeing of kids in mind,” the companies explained in a press release. Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT, has announced it is raising $450 million at a $4 billion valuation. The NFT company said the funds would be used to scale its team and operations, which it confirmed includes a new metaverse project called Otherside.
The metaverse project, Otherside, will integrate avatars from a number of NFT projects, including BAYC. Earlier this week, Yuga Labs tweeted a teaser that a metaverse project powered by its new ape-themed crypto coin, Ape Coin was in the works.
Among the investors are Andreessen Horowitz along with gaming studio Animoca Brands and cryptofirms FTX which are both already associated with YugaLabs.
Google, Samsung, Adidas as well as celebrities such as Colin Kaepernick, Shaquille O' Neal, Steve Aoki, and Timbaland among others also invested in the funding round.
