Looking to gamify your e-learning but feel overwhelmed by tight deadlines? You don’t need full-blown games—just 5 reusable game ingredients built in Storyline. In this video, I’ll show you how to create engaging learning challenges using tools like interactive gauges, hint systems, countdown timers, and progress bars, without adding extra work. These elements are easy to integrate and keep learners active, improving retention and real-world application.
You’ll also learn to harness the power of randomness with dice rolls to mimic real-life variability, making repetitive activities feel fresh and motivating. Whether it’s adjusting difficulty levels or promoting self-directed learning, these ingredients are essential for creating effective gamified e-learning.
Skip the gimmicks and focus on what works—active learning mechanics that turn your training from boring to engaging. Perfect for instructional designers who want game-based engagement without extra tech or budget.
When I was starting out as an instructional designer, I made one of the biggest mistakes you can make: I designed a detailed training game for a prospective client before they even signed the contract. Not only did they not hire me, but I ended up giving away my ideas for free.
Fast forward to today, and I recently stumbled upon one of those forgotten game designs. Looking at it now, I realized it has elements that could be incredibly useful to instructional designers looking to engage their learners.
In this video, I bring that design back to life and build it from scratch. It’s a competitive training game that simulates a complex system—perfect for teaching nuanced skills like business acumen. As I recreate the game in Storyline, I also walk you through:
How a fake opponent can motivate learners without the complications of real-time multiplayer or leaderboards. The challenges of designing for engagement while maintaining simplicity and balance. Why creating detailed game designs upfront can lead to problems (and what to do instead). Whether you’re curious about gamifying your training or want inspiration for designing e-learning games that challenge and captivate your audience, this video is packed with insights. Learn how to design competitive games, avoid common mistakes, and create gamified e-learning that learners actually enjoy.
Join me as I reflect on past lessons, share practical design strategies, and showcase the possibilities of gamification in instructional design. If you’ve been searching for ways to make your training stand out and engage learners on a deeper level, this video is for you.
