Virtual reality opens the doors to a new era for user interface design. Oculus VR speaks to Develop about its opportunities

Virtual reality doesn’t present user interface design with its first opportunity for transformation.

The dawn of 3D long ago afforded games makers the prospect of moving beyond flat heads-up-displays and conventional menus. And when mobile gaming finally realised its potential with the arrival of smartphones, those charged with implementing UI had a chance to establish the new standards of the virtual gamepad.

Qualcomm Unveils Low-Power Wi-Fi

Qualcomm Unveils Low-Power Wi-Fi | Low Power Heads Up Display | Scoop.it

Qualcomm Atheros introduced a low-power Wi-Fi chip familt designed to connect the "Internet of Everything."

The new QCA4002 and QCA4004 networking platforms include the IP stack and full networking services on the chip to enable customers to add Wi-Fi to virtually any product.  The platforms feature an on-chip processor and memory, which are designed to eliminate the need for a system controller that adds to product cost, complexity and power consumption. Using the QCA4004, customers can now write their own applications on the Qualcomm Atheros platform instead of simply using it for Wi-Fi connectivity.

Target applications for the QCA4002/4004 platforms include major home appliances (such as washing machines, air conditioners, hot water heaters, and so on), consumer electronics, and sensors and smart plugs for home lighting, security and automation systems. The QCA4004 has been incorporated into a washer/dryer combo and an air conditioner unit by Haier, a global leader in home appliances and consumer electronics.

Augmented Reality Glasses: What’s (Literally) On The Horizon

Augmented Reality Glasses: What’s (Literally) On The Horizon | Low Power Heads Up Display | Scoop.it
If you want one indication that augmented reality glasses aren’t quite ready to be the new revolution in tech, you need only go as far as the product name.

Google Glass has an embedded camera and a small screen above the right eye that projects images (pictures, email, maps, etc.) into the wearer’s field of vision. These images are both small and in the viewer’s periphery; at least one journalist who tried them on had to keep closing his left eye in order to focus. TTP’s glasses have transparent plastic lenses, which contain an optical structure that works in concert with a micro-projection system in the glasses leg. Their main advantage is a true “heads-up” display, which superimposes images onto the natural view out in front of you--like the street or your living room. ("Heads-up" was initially a military term to describe the digital projection used by pilots in airplanes.) The display differs from Google’s in that pictures appear on the horizon. You don’t need to shut an eye or squint; you simply see. TTP says its display will actually be quite helpful for users who are farsighted or need reading glasses. “It’ll be hugely beneficial for people in their fifties,” says Dr. Carmichael.
