As an urban historian & photographer, I try to peel back the layers of a city to see what's underneath. From the tops of bridges to the depths of sewer tunnels, these explorations of the urban environment help me puzzle together the interconnected, multi-dimensional history and complexity of the world's great cities.

Exactly a century ago, the brand new Paris (an incredible amount of so called "hausmanien" buildings have been built from 1900 to 1910) was flooded of 8 meters (around 30 feet) above the normal level of the Seine river. During one week, Parisians had to adapted their way of experiencing the city and even for an important amount of them, moved out and gathered in shelters all over the city. This kind of flood is supposed to happen once every century, therefore this 100th anniversary is not a simple commemoration, but almost a prophecy of what will probably occur in the coming years.

New York City Department of Transport have launched a safety education campaign with twelve QR Code signs. In the style of traditional street safety signs each is embedded with a QR Code that decodes as a haiku poem safety message (images below). 144 of the signs will be placed citywide in high-crash locations near cultural institutions and schools.

Cook + Fox’s Live Work Home is a flexible residence designed for the "new, urban context" in which living and working can walk hand in hand. Architects and contractors like to congratulate themselves for designing sustainable housing out of goodies like solar panels and low-flush toilets and the occasional green roof. Noble stuff. But take away the green bling--an all-but inevitability as homes change hands over the years--and your building is probably just as wasteful as any other.

In just eight short months, London will kick off the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Like every city on the eve of hosting a major world event, London has been unveiling building after new building from stadiums to restaurants. The shiny new Queen Elizabeth Olympic park is almost finished, which almost all of the main buildings finished on time, and includes Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Center. On top of a turf field over looking the rest of the campus is the new London Velodrome, one of the four permanent fixtures of the park.
