Très beau texte, et très vrai, de Nicolas Thirion. Mais. hélas, c’est un constat implacable maintes fois répété, déjà au début des années ‘80, qui dénonçait les effets pervers de la soi-disant démocratisation de l’Université confondant l’accès aux études et la réussite de celles-ci. Mais tout est dans la nuance: l’aide à la réussite n’a rien, en soi, d’un affaiblissement des exigences, elle tient de l’apprentissage de la méthode individuelle optimale. Le seul problème, comme Nicolas le dénonce très bien, est l’écart irréconciliable entre l’injonction d’augmenter le taux de réussite et l’absence de moyens adéquats, hormis quelques impulsions ponctuelles. Et ce n’est même pas la faute des responsables politiques successivement en charge et qui font avec les moyens du bord, c’est celle d’une société tout entière, qui ne se décidé pas à placer ses priorités dans le bon ordre. Et, comme toujours lorsque c’est la responsabilité collective qui est en cause, ce n’est la faute à personne... Ou au lampiste, quel qu’il soit.

When we look back twenty years, the picture is mixed. Clearly, a rapid and fundamental shift in higher education practice has taken place, driven by technology adoption. Yet at the same time, nothing much has changed, and many edtech developments have failed to have significant impact. Au moment où la question de l’avenir (disparition ou évolution structurelle) des provinces belges est posée, au moment où une solution doit impérativement être trouvée pour pallier les situations paradoxales que la croissance démographique et les flux résidentiels se réalisant dans un cadre institutionnel trop étriqué met en lumière aujourd’hui - et dans le cadre du regard que pose l’Université bicentenaire sur son environnement immédiat -, au moment enfin où toutes sortes de solutions partielles, insuffisantes voire déraisonnables surgissent d’un peu partout, il nous a semblé opportun de prendre le temps d’opérer une réflexion faisant appel à des mises au point et actualisations informées.

If enacted by the Alabama House of Representatives, Bill 258 would allow teachers to present “the theory of creation as presented in the Bible” in any class discussing evolution. Doing so would afford students the opportunity to choose which understanding of Earth’s natural history they wish to accept: evolutionary theory or creationist theology. Moreover, the bill would ensure that students accepting creationism instead of evolution would not be penalized for answering exam questions in their science courses in a way that reflects their preference for creationist explanations, “provided the response is correct according to the instruction received.”

Open-access journal articles have been found, to some extent, to be downloaded and cited more than non-OA articles. But could the same be true for books? Carrie Calder reports on recent research into how open access affects the usage of scholarly books, including the findings that OA books are, on average, downloaded seven times more, cited 50% more, and mentioned online ten times more. A number of accompanying interviews reveal that authors are choosing open access routes to publish their books not only because of wider dissemination and easier access but also for ethical reasons.
