Stonehenge tunnel benefits 'uncertain' says Audit Office - UK

Stonehenge tunnel benefits 'uncertain' says Audit Office - UK | Underground space | Scoop.it

The government wants to build a tunnel past the monument as part of a £1.6bn plan to upgrade the A303. However, the National Audit Office (NAO) estimates the likely cost as £1.9bn, and says it "must deliver value for taxpayers". Highways England says the route will cut congestion and boost the economy. Work is due to begin in 2021 with an expected opening date of 2026. The NAO estimates the project will only deliver £1.15 in benefits for every £1 spent. Auditor General Amyas Morse said: "The tunnel at Stonehenge is currently only just value for money by the department's own business case....

Kobe tunnel resounds with beautiful music - Japan | Underground space | Scoop.it

A tunnel might seem like an unlikely spot for concerts, but the Minatogawa Zuido tunnel in Kobe has become just that — it’s a popular place for live performances of jazz, brass bands and choruses. It was originally built to reroute the then Minatogawa river flowing through Kobe, but has now taken on a completely new role.... In February, about 180 people enjoyed a concert by a local chorus of students and others. The temperature was 10 C, and the performers’ clear singing voices resounded throughout the tunnel in the dim light.

Govt plans to build five-story underground facilities in TST - Hong Kong | Underground space | Scoop.it

Tsim Sha Tsui, one of the most crowded areas in Hong Kong, is likely to see a huge expansion if a government plan to develop its underground space materializes. The Civil Engineering and Development Department and the Planning Department launched on Wednesday the second phase of public consultation on a pilot study to develop underground…... Based on the results of the first stage of the consultation, which was completed in February 2017, the public generally agreed that the proper utilization of underground space and provision of an all-weather pedestrian network could alleviate the overcrowded street-level walking environment and improve pedestrian connectivity in those areas.

After a deeper evaluation of the conceptual schemes in the four SUAs, the government now recommends giving priority to the Kowloon Park Conceptual Scheme in Tsim Sha Tsui West....

'Reinvent Paris II' Is for a Post-Car Future - France

'Reinvent Paris II' Is for a Post-Car Future - France | Underground space | Scoop.it
Called Reinvent Paris II, the competition invited designers to come up with uses for a list of subterranean and marginal sites owned (with two private exceptions) by the city, or its transit authority RATP. Paris has long had a good deal of these: its subsoil is a honeycomb of tunnels, garages, sewers, and catacombs, while above ground it has a fair few historic road and rail links now supplanted by alternatives. In recent years, however, pro-pedestrian, pro-bike policies have notably swelled the number of these spaces, as pedestrianization along the Seine quays has closed tunnels and policies steadily phasing out access for more heavily polluting cars have made parking less of a priority.

What the 2019 master plan says about Singapore’s approach to land use

What the 2019 master plan says about Singapore’s approach to land use | Underground space | Scoop.it

That only three districts are identified provides a hint of the enormous challenges of systematically mapping the hitherto uncharted sub-surface terrain where transit lines, pipes and drains, telco cables and all forms of intrusions traverse, almost without rule or law. Without doubt, more needs to be studied — subterranean land rights, access and safety, psychological barriers, economic viability, design and functionality, among others — all of which proffer rich grounds for directed research that straddles many disciplinary domains. But once this “last” resource frontier is unlocked, the paybacks for this land-scarce city-state would be enormous. The prospects cannot be over-emphasised — consider Helsinki with its underground ice-skating rinks and concert halls, and Hong Kong, where underground caverns are used for infrastructure such as waste treatment plants.

Why Is Infrastructure So Expensive to Build in New York? - USA

Why Is Infrastructure So Expensive to Build in New York? - USA | Underground space | Scoop.it

It costs three times more to build a subway station in New York than in London or Paris. What if we could change that?....If you live in London, you won’t have to imagine it for long: London is nearly finished with work on Crossrail, a megaproject that will funnel commuter trains from London’s eastern and western suburbs into a new, 14-mile underground line .... it should open in 2020 or 2021 or so. When it does, it will enable a new service, to be called the Elizabeth line, which will increase the capacity of London’s rail-transit system by 10 percent. .....It feels like New York ought to be able to have something like this. Our city is even wealthier than London or Paris. Our buildings are taller. Our people are supposedly more entrepreneurial. And yet we cannot seem even to properly maintain the infrastructure we already have. The subway is plagued by delays. The New York City Housing Authority struggles with a multibillion-dollar backlog of deferred maintenance. ....

The tunnels are usually dug straight through solid bedrock. When they’re not, they go through wet silt, and men work in muddy rooms of pressurized air, under metal shields that keep water from filling in the tunnel. One of the most famous subway-construction accidents happened during a rush hour in 1915 on Seventh Avenue.
