More Britons say they have no religion than profess to be Christian, according to a new report. According to the British Social Attitudes Survey and the European Social Survey, the "major factor" in the development is that people who are brought up to be religious are losing their faith. More than two-thirds of non-religious people were raised as Christians or in another faith.

Just one in four members of the British public trust the Government to honestly present official statistics, a study has found. British Social Attitudes survey, conducted by the National Centre for Social research, found that large majorities of people questioned the presentation of figures ranging from unemployment rates to crime levels. 90 per cent of people trusted the Office for National Statistics to produce accurate statistics, but just 26 per cent said the Government would present these accurately.

Britain’s young people are now more right-wing and authoritarian in their political outlook than the previous generation, undermining the prevailing view that younger people tend to be more progressive in attitude. Research using British Social Attitudes Survey data taken from 1985-2012, found greater appetite among young people for right-wing policy-making on issues including wealth redistribution, welfare and crime.
