MultiLing Germany announced today that it will be an official Sponsor of DIESELMEDAILLE 2011, Germany's longest running inventor award. DIESELMEDAILLE was co-founded by Eugen Diesel, son of the engine designer Rudolf Diesel, in 1952. Since that time, DIESEL gold medals have been awarded to approximately 400 inventors, including several Nobel Prize winners such as Herrmann Staudinger, Jan Enders, Ernst Ruska and Manfred Eigen. Among the first to receive the prize was scientist Wernher von Braun. The list of awarded persons also includes the founders of the world-wide software company SAP, Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner and Klaus E. Tschira, as well as German entrepreneurs like Anthon Kathrein (antenna technology) 

Among the 135 Egyptian publishers that will participate is the National Centre for Translation, bringing some 400 titles translated into Arabic, covering a range of disciplines.

The idea: Google's "Conversation Mode" is a real-time polyglot and translator living in your smart phone. It listens to a sentence -- "Where is the bus stop?" Then it displays the translation within seconds, and reads back the sentence in the foreign language so you can have a (nearly!) seamless conversation with somebody in a foreign country who doesn't speak a lick of English.

Google is traveling around the world collecting speech samples from native speakers to expand their speech recognition technology, called Voice Search. They've added 20 new languages in the past year. Fourteen are available for instant translation on Conversation Mode.

Within the mind of any single translator of a liturgical text, formal equivalence and functional equivalence are always at work, opposing each other here, cooperating there. Formal equivalence by itself would give you translatorese, the awkward, often inscrutable prose of the sort that crude translation software is apt to serve up. Functional equivalence by itself would do as good a job of ensuring that the English representation of what was written in the original language was mangled, as any peculiar background music that complicated the passage but might be essential to discerning its tone would be cheerfully ignored, all in the interest of raising what the translator calculated to be the signal-to-noise ratio.
