Adams County sued over deaf man held 25 days

A lawsuit claims Adams County authorities detained a deaf man for 25 days in jail without providing a sign-language interpreter before domestic assault charges were dropped.

Timothy Siaki's federal lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and a finding that Adams County officials violated the Americans With Disabilities Act over his May 14, 2010, arrest and detention.

Medical interpreters break barriers to care

Spanish is Christina Alvarado's first language. The Toledo native didn't learn English until kindergarten.

And for the last three years, the Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center registered nurse has combined those languages with a third — medicine — to interpret for Spanish-speaking patients such as Josefa Negrin of Toledo, an 81-year-old who left Cuba as a refugee with 36 relatives more than three decades ago.

SIGN LANGUAGE SET TO BE COMPULSORY SUBJECT | The Voice

Sign language is likely to become compulsory for all learners in Botswana if what the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development Keletso Rakhudu said is anything to go by.

New Portal for Interpreter Training Records Will Help Providers Meet New Standards on ADVANCE for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists

Language Line Services, based in Monterey, Calif., has launched a secure, on-demand, Web-based interpreter training records portal for its health care customers to help them meet new and revised regulatory requirements of the Joint Commission standards for language interpreter proof of competency. The new standards for language access move out of the pilot phase and begin impacting accreditation decisions on Jan. 1.
