Lora Rice has the best job in the world.
At least that’s how she described her work as an educational sign language interpreter to the gathering at Friday afternoon’s Grand Island Public Library Adult Summer Reading Program presentation, titled “A day in the life of a sign interpreter.” Rice and certified Hearing Instrument Specialist Roxann Ellison gave those in attendance an earful about their experiences with sign language and hearing assistance technology.
Rice’s first interaction with sign language was as a child in rural Nebraska, where she picked up some of the language from her neighbor’s deaf uncles. Years later, as a special education worker in Grand Island Public Schools, Rice volunteered to learn sign language to assist a deaf student in the program. By the time Rice had finished the preliminary community college classes, the student had moved, but then Rice saw an advertisement seeking a deaf interpreter. Filled with nerves, she was sure she’d blow the interview.

The Ninomiya Town Assembly in the Kanagawa Prefecture with a televising steering committee has started considering towards offering sign-language interpreting.

The sign-language interpreting will be available for only general discussions, and if everything goes smoothly, it will be also available in the parliamentary general session in September.

In the past, when the introduction of parliamentary live telecast was considered, the town assembly also considered to include sign-language interpreting.

However, since a budget was too much in respect of equipment --- there was the necessity of a new camera for exclusive use such like a case of TV program with sign-language interpreting, the idea was given up.

Just as Stanford University undergraduate Adam Duran recently developed his Braille-writing software to help blind people communicate visually with a standard touchscreen, a new innovation we’ve spotted is doing a similar thing for those with hearing disabilities. Created by students at the University of Houston, MyVoice is a device that aims to translate sign language into sound and vice versa.

While sign language has long proven an effective way to enable communication between deaf and non-deaf people, it takes time to learn and many hearing people don’t have the skill, using another person to interpret instead. Recently awarded first place at the American Society of Engineering Education Gulf Southwest Annual Conference, MyVoice is big enough to fit in the hand yet contains a built-in microphone, speaker, soundboard, video camera and monitor. Much like the Microsoft Kinect can detect individual gestures, the device recognizes hand movements and is able to translate them into their corresponding spoken version using a synthesized voice. It can also recognize voice, translating words into sign language symbols on its display. Jeffrey Seto, one of the students working on the project, told the university’s website: “The biggest difficulty was sampling together a database of images of the sign languages. It involved 200-300 images per sign.”

Channel 7's Jason Pederson reported in his Seven on Your Side segment last night on a story bubbling in the rehabilitation services field for months.

In the first of a two-part report (the second will air tonight), Pederson interviewed two people about a $35,000 position to interpret for deaf and hearing impaired people at Arkansas Rehabilitation Services. They said the woman who was hired in February, Clara Taylor, was not qualified, not certified as an interpreter, scored second lowest among nine applicants and failed to translate a simple video in either of two types of sign language.

He's been accused of cronyism in hiring and unnecessary expenditures on his executive offices on Capitol Avenue, one of two offices he uses.

Francophone African Sign Language (Langue des Signes d'Afrique Francophone, or LSAF) is the variety, or varieties, of American Sign Language (ASL) used in several francophone countries of Africa. Education for the Deaf in these countries is based on ASL and written French; there is therefore a French influence on the language of the classroom.[1]
With the exception of Algerian Sign Language, the sign languages of francophone Africa are unrelated to French Sign Language, except indirectly through their derivation from ASL. (A few countries have languages unrelated to either: Madagascar Sign Language derives from Norwegian SL, and Tunisian Sign Language is apparently a language isolate.) This is because most schools for the deaf in the region were founded by the American missionary Andrew Foster, starting in 1974, or his students.

The Bell family studied speech and sound for at least two generations before Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The inventor's father, Alexander Melville Bell, and grandfather, also named Alexander, were both speech specialists. In 1864, Alexander Melville Bell invented an international alphabet called Visible Speech, which showed deaf people how to shape their lips, tongues and throats when speaking. He and his son later wrote articles and books together about phonetics and Visible Speech.

Some engineering technology students at the University of Houston developed a model for a sign language translation device.

This thesis sets out to undertake research into the very important topic of sign language and its usage, particularly in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Three schools are used in this study. Interviews and questionnaires were used to conduct research with teachers, students and deaf teacher assistants within this context. The analysis of this data is presented in Chapter five of this thesis. Chapter one of the thesis introduces the topic as well as the research methodology that is used in this work. In chapter two the history of South African sign language is presented with some commentary on the status of sign language planning in South Africa more generally. Chapter three of the thesis presents a case study of what has happened in relation to the growth and usage of sign language in Britain, reference is also made to the status and use of sign language in other countries such as America as well as European nations such as Denmark. The purpose of this is to see whether there are any lessons to be learned for South African Sign Language from this comparative analysis.

Sign language can greatly improve the communication capability of hearing-impaired people, but there’s still a major barrier in that most people don’t understand it. New prototype gadgets could change that, by automatically translating hand motions into audible speech that a non-signing person can interpret.
