Mass changes have liturgists scurrying to craft new music | National Catholic Reporter

The new English translation of the Mass, meant to reflect the original Latin text more closely, is the product of eight years of work by an international commission of bishops. The final text was released this summer, and churches across the U.S. must begin using it on Nov. 27.
The textual changes do not affect hymns or other stand-alone songs that can be inserted in the order of the Mass, but they do affect the prayers that are sung or recited at every Mass, called "ordinaries."
That means composers have had to write completely new musical settings or adapt old ones for the ordinaries. According to Hilgartner, the musical options are as diverse as before, ranging from chant to contemporary styles.

It is with an increasing feeling of queasiness that I have followed the incidents surrounding the Parisian weekly Charlie Hebdo and its special issue on the sharia, which was inspired by the political developments in Libya and Tunisia.

Changes in Mass loom for Roman Catholics

Palm Beachers will join the rest of the United States and other English-speaking countries in using a new translation of the Mass on Nov. 27, which marks the beginning of Advent. Church leaders say the new translation better reflects the original Latin text and is more in line with what the rest of the world is saying in their respective languages.

“The rest of the world did a great job in translating,” said the Rev. Brian King, director of liturgy for the Diocese of Palm Beach. “We did not. We only translated the basic meaning and not word for word. For the last 40 years, all English- speaking Catholic churches have been using that translation.

Was the Real Discovery of the Expanding Universe Lost in Translation?

Baltimore MD (SPX) Nov 15, 2011 -
The greatest astronomical discovery of the 20th century may have been credited to the wrong person. - ... Lemaitre's discovery went unnoticed because it was published in French, in a rather obscure Belgian science journal called the Annales de la Societe Scientifique de Bruxelles (Annals of the Brussels Scientific Society).

The story would have ended there, except that Lemaitre's work was later translated and published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. When published in 1931, some of Lemaitre's own calculations from 1927, of what would be later called the Hubble Constant, were omitted!

The fact that paragraphs were missing from the translated paper has been known (although not widely) since 1984. There has been persistent speculation among astronomers over "who dunnit?" Did the Monthly Notices editors cut the paragraphs out? Did Edwin Hubble himself have an influencing hand and censor the paper to eliminate any doubt that he was the original discoverer of the expanding universe?
