Here's to the unsung heroes of language and culture: interpreters.

Our city recognizes National Interpreter Appreciation Day on May 7, highlighting the essential work these professionals do to ensure no linguistic barrier is too high to scale.

With a plethora of languages woven into the fabric of our society, the role of interpreters is more critical than ever.

They serve everywhere, from courtrooms to classrooms, making connections possible.

Interpreters are not translators for those scratching their heads.

Sure, they both deal with languages, but while translators wrangle with the written word, interpreters juggle the spoken or signed language—live and in person.

This isn't just about knowing two languages; it's about quick thinking, cultural know-how, and delivering messages with pinpoint accuracy, often without the luxury of a pause button.

According to a Fort Worth City News article, some interpreters specialize in simultaneous interpretation while others opt for consecutive interpretation.

Let's be clear: this isn't an interpreter-exclusive club. This appreciation bandwagon has room for translators, too, with International Translation Day falling on Sept. 30. But come the first Wednesday of May, it's all about those real-time linguistic acrobats. These professionals started being formally recognized in 2013 and have deserved the shoutouts ever since, especially considering the brain gymnastics they perform with such finesse, whether through American Sign Language or the myriad spoken languages."
