Water reuse in Hill County imperative to combat water scarcity, report says

In a new report, the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance (GEAA) detailed the importance of utilizing water reuse, or recycled water, to combat water scarcity in the booming Hill Country counties. Water reuse can be used as an alternative to existing water supplies and protect those supplies by diverting wastewater that otherwise would be disposed into “sensitive” waterways. Despite the benefits, GEAA points out that many Hill County counties don’t utilize the resource.

Legislation calling for fast-growing Wise County to have a regional water district is at an impasse as elected officials and developers are in a disagreement over how to allocate seats on the board of directors. Leaders in Alvord, Aurora, Boyd, Bridgeport, Decatur, Newark, New Fairview, Paradise and Rhome have worked together with county leaders for a over a year to develop a regional approach to address the water demand, as studies indicate there isn’t enough ground water to sustain the growth.

An innovative outbreak detection program that tracks disease-causing viruses in wastewater identified the measles virus in Houston samples collected in early January 2025, before cases were reported. The team that developed the program, which includes researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, the School of Public Health at University of Texas Health Science Center – Houston, the Houston Health Department and Rice University, published their findings in the American Journal of Public Health.

Governor Greg Abbott appointed Richard “Carson” Dennis and Elizabeth Thomas to the Trinity River Authority Board of Directors for terms set to expire March 15, 2029, and on March 15, 2027, respectively. Additionally, the Governor reappointed Jerry House, D.Min. to the board for a term set to expire on March 15, 2029. The Authority oversees development and conservation of surface water resources of the Trinity River Basin.

A representative from the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) told the Frisco City Council that work to expand the Panther Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant will cost more than $170 million. Mark Simon, NTMWD's director of engineering, said during council's April 6 work session the district recommends moving forward with the bid from Crossland Construction for $170,618,000. He added the total bond sale will be $205.2 million, once additional construction costs and contingency fees are factored in.
