Edinburgh has much to thanks its unique geography for, not least the rippling panorama of hills and inactive volcanoes – one of which has a castle perched on top of it – which give its centre a multi-storey effect and conspire to make it one of the world’s most beautiful cities. This geography, as much as anything, is the reason the Edinburgh Festival actually began in Edinburgh at all.
