Moderate GOP Group Targets Tea Party Candidates For Defeat

Moderate GOP Group Targets Tea Party Candidates For Defeat | Tea With The Mad Hatter | Scoop.it

"In the wake of the partial government shutdown, many establishment Republicans argued that the hardliners in the GOP, backed by the Tea Party, needed to be reigned in. Former Republican Rep. Steve LaTourette of Ohio tells David Greene about his efforts to put millions of dollars toward that goal in the 2014 mid-term elections."

"Let’s not be mealy-mouthed. This speaker, Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch, accuses the president of treason in this speech, of deliberately pursuing policies to kill members of the armed services, because he is an Islamist, and allegedly “bows to Allah”. What he is saying is the president is a deliberate mole of foreign agents determined to destroy the American way of life. And there is no pushback from the crowd and no pushback from GOP leaders." - Andrew Sullivan

The Tea Party’s Path to Irrelevance

The Tea Party’s Path to Irrelevance | Tea With The Mad Hatter | Scoop.it

"Tea Partyers often style themselves as disciples of Thomas Jefferson, the high apostle of limited government. But by taking the ramparts against immigration, the movement is following a trajectory that looks less like the glorious arc of Jefferson’s Republican Party than the suicidal path of Jefferson’s great rivals, the long-forgotten Federalists, who also refused to accept the inexorable changes of American demography." - James Traub, a columnist at foreignpolicy.com and NY Times OpEd contributor

Texas Insurance: Law for Roller Coasters, Not Fertilizer Plants

Texas Insurance: Law for Roller Coasters, Not Fertilizer Plants | Tea With The Mad Hatter | Scoop.it
Texas law requires amusement rides are insured but the state has nothing on the books for facilities storing tons of ammonium nitrate. Does that make sense?

This isn't a question asked by some anti-corporate, liberal, or hyperbolic media source.

It's an article by Chad Hemenway, News Editor for PropertyCasualty360.com, an insurance industry information resource.

Due to the lack of regulatory oversight and a lack of proper insurance coverage, the city of West has no choice but to sue West Fertilzer and to request aid from FEMA to build temporary schools.

Online news site Politico, citing unnamed sources, reported Sunday that the broadcaster planned to drop the conservative talk show hosts from its stations at the end of the year.

The report said Cumulus has decided it will not renew contracts with either host and that it would remove the conservative talk personalities from more than 40 Cumulus channels in major markets.

Cumulus CEO and Chairman Lew Dickey was quick to address the issue Tuesday during a conference call with investors to discuss the company’s quarterly performance.

5 ways fundamentalists misinterpret the Bible

5 ways fundamentalists misinterpret the Bible | Tea With The Mad Hatter | Scoop.it

The Christian message doesn’t contradict science, and nor is it concerned with bourgeois politics. Ultimately Christianity (and many other religions) are about transcending politics and fighting for social justice. Think of Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Thich Quang Duc – all of whom were influenced by their religion to change the world. Jesus saw how oppression and oppressors consumed the world. He, as all great reformers have, sided with the oppressed. This kind of skewed fundamentalism is radically new and far removed from true Christianity. True Christianity offers us a far superior doctrine — one of social justice, love and equality....

Commentary: Glenn Beck’s Nazi exhibit

Commentary: Glenn Beck’s Nazi exhibit | Tea With The Mad Hatter | Scoop.it

Earlier this month, Glenn Beck rented several rooms in downtown Salt Lake City at the Grand America Hotel to display an "Independence Through History" exhibition. This accompanied his "Man in the Moon" rally, which took place just a few miles away at the USANA Amphitheatre.

The exhibition occupied two small rooms and brought together a panoply of objects spanning three centuries. Early American currency was presented alongside 18th century Bibles, sculptures of simian "slaves" and presidential memorabilia. Many of these items derived from the personal collection of David Barton, a publisher of tea party literature.
