This aim of the study, conducted at Golinga irrigation scheme in Ghana, was to investigate how water supply and plant density, components of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), can improve rice yield and reduce water use. Water control and planting distance interaction significantly influenced plant height where intermittent flooding promoted taller plants in narrow and wider planting distance (20 x 20 cm and 40 x 40 cm). Days to 50% flowering lengthened with increasing planting distance. Tiller and reproductive tiller number per plant increased with increasing planting distance. Intermittent flooding and increased spacing induced better root development. Panicle number per unit area, paddy grain yield and straw weight performed best under 25 x 25 cm planting distance. Paddy yield of 5.2 ton/ha at 25 x 25 cm was above the national average. Intermittent and continuous flooding gave a similar performance. Increasing plant spacing helps to improve individual hill performance.
In conclusion, the study shows that wider spacing improves individual hill performance but if the plant density is low the higher individual hill performance cannot compensate for the reduced plant density. Intermittent flooding of rice does not put the crop in a disadvantageous position as it elicited similar response as continuous condition. Farmers are recommended to increase planting distance of rice to between 20 x 20 cm and 25 x 25 cm and apply water intermittently.

SRI-Rice's insight:
The Simulgames project is intended to boost employment and agricultural production capacities with the massive training of young people in villages with simulation games on mobile. A new version is now available in French, Ewe and Kabyè languages. The game allows a farmer to access a set of knowledge and practices that contribute to improving his income, quality and yields of each crop through the acquisition of practices of the SRI method (System of Rice Intensification). The games also aim to change the way young people view agricultural professions, and demonstrate that with this work it is possible to earn a living and create jobs for the inhabitants of the villages.

The American Brahman breed of cattle originated fromBos Indicus cattle. These hardy cattle were originally brought to the United Stated from India. The American Brahman was the first beef cattle breed developed in the United States. The American Brahman are for the most part the result of a cross of four different Indian cattle breeds: Gyr, Guzerat, Nelore and Krishna Valley. Best place to buy livestock online at Livestock Animal Exchange.
The American Brahman cattle originated from a nucleus of approximately 266 bulls and 22 females of several Bos indicus varieties of cattle which were imported into the United States between 1854 and 1926. The American Brahman has been used to develop numerous other U.S. Beef Breeds of cattle including Brangus, Beefmaster, Simbrah and Santa Gertrudis.
Brahman cattle are known for their extreme tolerance to heat and are widespread in tropical regions. They are resistant to insects due to their thick skin. Brahman cattle live longer than many other breeds, often producing calves at ages 15 and older. Best place to order livestock online

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 global health crisis is also affecting food security across Liberia and throughout Africa, the Community of Hope Agriculture Project (CHAP) initiated ways of keeping her out-grower scheme farmers under the “Rice Investment for Empowerment” (RISE) growing food during this crisis period in support of Government Liberia C-19 Food Security Plan through the Ministry of Agriculture, calling on everyone to grow something during the lockdown.
According to Robert Bimba, CHAP continues promoting SRI principles for growing rice under the current health crisis as was done during the Ebola crisis in 2014-2015 through the regional SRI-WAAPP program. An interesting development is that many farmers see the SRI principles as similar to the COVID-19 health precautions. These include wider spacing (social distancing), single seedlings (avoiding crowds), AWD (frequent hand-washing), and increased soil health (keeping healthy), to name a few. [For the rest of the list, see Robert Bimba's article.]
Improvement of irrigation infrastructure in Mbeya Region has increased the area of irrigated land from 49,117 hectares in 2018 to 71,890 hectares this year, thanks to the initiative made by the government through the National Irrigation Commission (NIRC) . …A senior agricultural officer from NIRC, Mnadi Taribo said that the commission has been providing training on new methods of rice farming called 'system of rice intensification (SRI)’. According to him, the new system of rice farming doubles rice production per acre, citing Madibira scheme as one example whereby through SRI production has increased to 9.3 tonnes per hectare, from 7.2 tonnes per hectare (traditional farming). In Uturo scheme, the SRI method increased production to 13 tonnes per hectare from 5.7 tonnes (traditional farming). Taribo further explained that SRI methods help increase yields by over 30 percent while using 40 percent less water than conventional methods.

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) was introduced in the Mwea irrigation scheme in Kenya in 2009. After introduction and testing of various weeders there, foundries were asked to make the most effective weeders and farmers were encouraged to use them.
It is now over 10 years since SRI was introduced in Kenya. As SRI adoption has spread, the demand for weeders has grown, and individual farmers started ordering for weeders directly from the foundries. Today, rotary weeding is the preferred mode for weeding in Mwea, Ahero and West Kano irrigation schemes. The weeders are sold for between 20 to 30 USD and farmers are able to buy locally-made weeders without project support. It is a win-win value-chain development, creating employment opportunities and reducing the drudgery of labour in paddy rice production.
...Efforts to improve rice productivity in Njage village in Tanzania's Iringa region have been ongoing for several years. The system of rice intensification (SRI) was introduced in 2009 through the collective efforts of the district extension services, Kilombero Plantation Limited (KPL), USAID, and others. The combined effect of using SRI the variety SARO 5 has improved rice productivity from 10 bags/acre on average, to up to 35–40 bags (8600–9800 Kg/ha).
Improved rice productivity attracted the interest of USDA, World bank and local NGOs to support Njage rice farmers under CWAUNJA, a rice farmer irrigation scheme association, in their efforts to improve irrigation, storage and processing infrastructure.
The study assesses the performance of existing conventional paddy irrigation system compared to SRI technology in terms of efficient water use and rice yield and develops alternative irrigation schedules for better rice production grown under limited water supply in surface irrigation. The results were used as inputs to the CROPWAT irrigation management model, which can estimate crop water requirements and net irrigation requirement.
Irrigation Water Use (IWU) in the SRI treatments was 2316.7 m3/ha compared to 2966.7 m3/ha in the conventional practice translating to a saving of 21.9%. SRI system demonstrated significantly higher water productivity (0.5 kg/m3) compared to conventional system with 0.3 kg/m3. SRI increased Water Productivity (WP) by 67% while Land Productivity (LP) increased by 59.5%. The study concludes that SRI is capable of producing considerably higher rice yields and substantial saving on irrigation water use as compared to the conventional flooded system. Adapting irrigation scheduling using CROPWAT for SRI will produce a better water management system, which also saves irrigation water.
Erika Styger presents her work on scaling-up the agro-ecological methodology--the System of Rice Intensification (SRI)--in West Africa. This journey began with one farmer in Mali 12 years ago, and had grown to 50,000 farmers in 13 countries of West Africa by 2016.
SRI-Rice's insight:
Three years ago, rice farmers from Togo's Zio Prefecture participated in System of Rice Intensification (SRI) trainings. Padawi Siou, one of the first rice producers of Agbélouvé Center to adopt SRI after attending trainings through the NGO GRAPHE via the West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP), credits SRI with his improved financial conditions.
... 90% of rice producers associated with the Agbélouvé Center have adopted SRI, which now gives an improved return: 4.95 tons of rice per hectare against 2.49 tons per hectare for the conventional method.
How learning new ways of farming from the youth in his community doubled the rice production of a 63-year old farmer... Students in Junior Farmer Field and Life Schools received training from FAO in System of Rice Intensification (SRI). The young students then taught these methods to other farmers like Zablon. “The young people taught me how to select the best seeds, how to establish a good nursery and about the best time for sowing. They also taught me how to space the seedlings for good results,” Zablon discloses, adding: “This is all new to me! You know, such young minds are still active and productive. So I listen to them.”
This research evaluates practices of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in the lowland agroforestry ecologies that have irrigated rice. On-farm testing was conducted in three regions - Tahoua, Zinder and Dosso. SRI practices in these regions were compared to conventional rice production system by forty-five producers. Results showed clearly that relative to conventional practice, SRI methods increases tiller production by 45% and paddy yield by 58.2%. Furthermore, results showed that 55.5% of producers implemented thoroughly SRI methods, and 11% of producers applied them moderately. Despite their moderate usage of SRI methods, the latter group of producers also got a promising gain on their investment. The authors suggest that scaling-up SRI practices in lowlands ecologies of Niger has a high potential to increase returns to rice growers.

Climate-Smart Rice Farming and Environment Smart Rice Farming are being used interchangeably to refer to the system of rice farming that sustainably increases productivity, enhances adaptive capacity and reduces greenhouse gas emissions where possible. Rice farming today is faced with several agronomic and environmental challenges related to the intensification of production. Deceleration in the growth of rice yields, soil depletion, growing water use, increasing water and air pollution as well as climate change are some of the biggest areas of concern... System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is one of the proven techniques to ensure environmental smart rice farming practice.
SRI-Rice's insight:
FIRCA, technical and fiduciary coordination unit of the Agricultural Productivity Program in West Africa (WAAPP/PPAAO), introduced agricultural technologies in the food sector in Côte d'Ivoire from 2011 to 2016. M KOUAKOU Marcel is one of the pioneers in Côte d'Ivoire, a rice producer living in Yamoussoukro, who continues to promote SRI.
Food security in Kenya is at stake due to decline in farm productivity with an ever-increasing population which is worsened by global warming. Improvement of agricultural productivity may not be realized soon as rice farmers currently uses traditional method of flooding rice which has been reported to result in low rice yields. System of Rice intensification (SRI) provides an opportunity improve rice yields. This study was undertaken in Ahero Irrigation Scheme to compare yield production of conventional and SRI rice production for IR 2793-80-1 cultivar. SRI experiments recorded higher number of effective tillers with experiment having a spacing of 20cm by 20cm and transplanted at 8-11 days, which gave 321 per m2 as compared to 226 effective tillers/m2. Seed yield/plant was highly significant in SRI (39.61 g) as compared to a traditional paddy system (17.32 g). Transplanting rice seedling at the age of 8 to 11 days and at 20cm by 20cm spacing recorded highest seed yield/ha of 4.7 t/ha as compared to traditional flooding which recorded 2.7 t/ha. These results suggest that planting young rice seedlings can improve grain yield, which is likely due to an increase in the of tillers per square meters, plant height and better plant rooting ability.
Here's a collection of over 50 videos about the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) that SRI-RIce has collected over the past decade from around the world.
The National Irrigation Board in Kenya is promoting a rice production system (SRI) to improve food security. The programme combines using certified seeds and intensive water management with high levels of farmer sensitization.
[French language video on SRI for farmers in Burkina Faso.]
SRI-Rice's insight:
This article explains that rice is a staple food in Mali but they are required to import nearly half of their rice. "SRI has the strong possibility of reversing this trend, doubling rice production and reducing food insecurity". The article further explains WAAPP/PPAAO (the program that disseminated SRI) and describes the agroecological approach.
GODFREY Pascal is one of young rice growers in Kilosa District who are benefiting from the Partnership for Sustainable Rice Systems Development in Sub-Saharan Africa project. ...He describes that project and the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) as a game-changer due to the fact that it triples rice production per acre which in turn addresses food securtiy and poverty.
The World Bank’s Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Trust Fund financed a project centered on piloting participatory Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Nile Delta. The Enhanced Water Resources Management Project resulted in improved surface and groundwater management. From the project start in 2011 to the project closure in 2016, 4,436 people were trained on pilot schemes. In addition, due to the reduction of water used by applying the system of rice intensification, water savings reached 8,500 cubic meters/feddan/year (a feddan is defined as an Egyptian unit of area equivalent to 1.038 acres or 0.42 ha).
Adoption of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has transformed farmers’ livelihoods in Rukwa and Katavi regions by doubling rice production per acre, thanks to the second-phase of Tanzania Agricultural Partnership (TAP II) initiative.
Tanzania’s Government launched the Expanding Rice Production Project (ERPP) in 2015 to boost rice production, increase food security and strengthen the country’s agricultural sector. The ERPP, which commenced in Morogoro and Zanzibar, is focused on improving agricultural practices for small-scale farmers and farms run by women. Farmers learned a new farming technique called System of Rice Intensification (SRI), which increased rice productivity. More than 13,000 people had benefited from the program as of December 2017, with rice farmers tripling production. By strengthening agriculture, and increasing food security, smallholder farmers will have less of a risk of falling back into poverty because fluctuation in food prices will decrease. The ERPP is expected to help 165,345 people by the end of the program in late April 2020.
