Lockdown had led to a sudden shift from a crop shortfall following weather challenges last season to a surplus for potato giant McCain, as it lost 50 per cent of sales overnight. The last 10 years have thrown up multiple climate challenges for potato growers and McCain was looking to help create certainty for farmers and build supply chain resilience, reports Alex Black, a business reporter at Farmers Guardian in the UK.
And when the hospitality closure hit McCain before planting they were able to speak with growers about the challenges they faced. The McCain farmer pledge, an investment of £25m in the British potato industry, was focused on trying to build certainty for farmers facing weather volatility. Mr Metheringham said there were reasons to be positive, with sales better than expected.

The hospitality industry has faced unprecedent disruption over the last two decades, and now, the spread of the coronavirus pandemic around the world has brought the worldwide tourism industry to a sudden freeze. In these uncertain times, hotel operators must master competitive agility to bring back profitability, and produce the significant value that has been lost over the last months. Competitive agility means they need to be prepared for boosting growth, become a champion at optimizing costs, and refresh the operating model by streamlining the way of working. Of course, all this needs to be done while also protecting the health and safety of employees, consumers, and business partners.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Business But how has the company fared in the midst of the new COVID-19 crisis? Recently, we interviewed LPR to learn more about the impact that the pandemic has had on the business as well as the company’s plans for managing the sudden supply chain disruptions. When asked about the consequences of the pandemic on their business activity, representatives from LPR told us that they’d actually “seen high demand over the past two weeks - for both the delivery of pallets to customers’ production sites and for the collection of pallets from distributors after use.” They reported that “collected volumes were around 15 percent higher” than this time last year. However, they also noted that “customer volumes into the hospitality sector [have] ceased...an impact that should not be overlooked.” As for their employees, they expressed that they were “fortunate that all of [their] employees are able to work from home and are therefore able to continue...their day to day activities.”

As many as 1,200 Canadian companies could be importing products made by children and forced labourers. A proposed federal bill is hoping to crack down on Canadian companies that import products tainted by child and forced labour. The Modern Slavery Bill, tabled in the House of Commons Thursday by Liberal MP John McKay, would require companies to publicly release a report every year, detailing what they've done to ensure their supply chains are transparent and free of goods and materials fully or partially produced by children and forced labourers.
