A group of global companies including Apple, Nike and PepsiCo have launched the Clean Energy Procurement Academy to train supply chain partners in the Asia Pacific, where renewable power is tougher to source.

Over the past five years, big corporations have signed contracts to buy 148 gigawatts of clean energy, with the aim of slashing their Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions (the most direct form of carbon dioxide production). Now, a half-dozen of those companies are funding a training program to accelerate the adoption of renewable power in their Asia Pacific supply chains.

President Joe Biden has signed into law the most significant piece of legislation supporting clean energy and climate change mitigation in U.S. history.

The Inflation Reduction Act stands to devote $369 billion to clean energy incentives, energy efficiency, green fuels, and more— actions researchers say could bring the U.S. in line with its Paris Agreement goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2005 levels.

"With this law, the American people won and the special interests lost," Biden said at a bill signing ceremony on Aug. 16.

Heineken España has signed a partnership with Iberdrola, that will allow the company to brew its beer using only renewable energies by 2023, as part of its commitment to sustainability. The companies claim that the strategic partnership is Spain’s first long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) between an electricity supplier and a brewer, and that it will help both firms reach their clean energy goals.

The Zero-Emission Vehicles Act (ZEVA), passed on May 29, 2019, means all new light-duty cars and trucks sold in the province will be clean energy vehicles by 2040, delivering on a key commitment the government made in its CleanBC plan. British Columbians are already buying the most zero-emission vehicles per capita in Canada. In the first quarter of 2019, they made up over 6% of new light-duty vehicle sales in B.C. Due to the popularity of its CEVforBC rebate program, the government recently topped up the incentives with another $10 million, part of the $42 million that was committed in Budget 2019.

Online crafts retailer Etsy Inc will go green by offsetting planet-warming carbon emissions from its shipping activities, the U.S. company said on Wednesday, joining a host of companies making public moves to battle climate change. The state of New York has passed legislation in its latest budget that will require its public power provider to source 100% clean energy for electricity production by the end of this decade. The move boosts renewable energy and could give the public more control over their energy.

Renewable energy sourcing by US-based corporates set for record high in 2019

Published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), the Corporate Energy Outlook report states that corporations, globally, signed contracts to purchase 8.6GW of clean power between January and June 2019, up from 7.2GW during the same period in 2018. The US was confirmed to continue dominating this growth, with 5.95GW of deals having been secured in the first half of 2019. This means that the country accounted for 69% of all activity during this period. "Companies are once again flocking to Texas - historically the largest corporate procurement market in the country - where 40 per cent of the activity in 2019 has occurred,” the report states. Indeed, big-name brands with solar or wind generation facilities in Texas include the likes of Target, Facebook, Google and Nike.
