Mandarin Oriental Progress Update on Eliminating Single-Use Plastic Across Portfolio.

Mandarin Oriental Progress Update on Eliminating Single-Use Plastic Across Portfolio.   | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it
In October 2019, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group pledged to eliminate all single-use plastic, across its portfolio of 33 luxury hotels, by the end of March 2021.

A year on from the Group's pledge, this second progress report highlights both the achievements made to date and some of the continuing challenges.

The company has committed to eliminating single-use plastic across all areas of its hotels, including rooms, spa, transport, restaurants and bars as well as in areas unseen by the guest, such as offices and kitchens.

The focus remains on the elimination of 60 of the most common single-use plastic items identified by hotels which are estimated to make up 95% of the total number of items. Many of these items have now either been eliminated or are in the process of being phased out as plastic stock is depleted. So far, the Group's hotels have eliminated an average of 70% of the 60 most commonly used items, excluding supplier packaging, with steady progress across all departments.

SDGs and Climate Action

Sustainable Event Alliances insight:

How are the Sustainable Development Goals linked to the Climate Emergency and what can eventprofs do?

Opting for veggie or plant-based catering can massively reduce the carbon footprint of your event, helping towards SDG Goal 13.

SDG Goal 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts and it is linked to all 16 of the other Goals.

Plant based ingredients generally require fewer resources, contributing to SDG Goal 12.

Convincing your stakeholders about your choice is a good way of working towards SDG Goal 17, Partnership for the Goals!

Follow us for tips on how to reduce the carbon footprint of your event.

COP26 conference - one year to go

COP26 conference - one year to go | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The COP26 conference - the most important event ever to solve the Climate Emergency - One year to go.

Sustainable Event Alliances insight:

Today would have been the start of COP26, unfortunately it has been delayed by the pandemic. COP26 is the annual UN climate conference. A ‘COP’ means ‘conference of parties’.

Governments and negotiators from across the world meet to discuss how to keep temperature rises below dangerous levels and prevent the climate crisis from causing even worse catastrophes for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people.

COP26 is really important because it is the first moment when countries have to set out more ambitious goals for ending their contribution to climate change under the Paris Agreement.

The aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the average global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees.

COP26 has been postponed until November 2021, but delaying COP26 is not a reason to delay climate action. Follow us this week as we highlight the main issues in the Climate Emergency.

The climate clock is ticking.

Six things every event professional can draw on the start their sustainability journey

Six things every event professional can draw on the start their sustainability journey | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Here is this week's live session between Lisa and Meegan at ISE (Institute for Sustainable Events - the SEA's training partner).

We discuss the six foundations events professionals just starting out on their event sustainability journey can draw on or have in the back of their minds....

1. Don't add to the problem (!!)
2. Add your voice
3. Every little bit helps
4. Don't be fearful of cost
5. You don't need to be an expert
6. Take your time, but do it quickly

Next week we are going to attempt to do the session in a way that people can interact with us. OK maybe that might be the week after next.

Let's see!!!https://fb.watch/1zbvA4938s/

The SEA is excited to announce Gobelet as a new member.  "Gobelet believes we can end single-use packaging in our lifetime, together. Gobelet builds technology-enabled systems that allow large scale events to end their reliance on single-use products by deploying reusables. The Globelet platform enables our clients to attach either monetary or non-monetary incentives to the return of our products so we can wash and reuse them, at scale. Some people call it the circular economy; we call it Globelet."
