Life Cycle Analysis

Manufacturing a product can be very complex. Raw materials come from many different sources, and obtaining each one of those materials involves a different series of inputs, outputs and processes, each of which has impacts on the environment. To identify the total environmental impact of a product it is necessary to do a life cycle analysis.

Here is water use in California per capita in 2008.

 

The lowest use was San Francisco county at 108 gallons per day. The highest use was Mono County at 470 gallons per day. We here in Ventura County used 213.4 gallons per day. Note that use includes swimming pools, tap water and agricultural inputs. This also only includes direct consumption (and doesn't account for water used to produce the products made elsewhere which we in turn consumer here). This is really a map of population density (reduced the per capita number) vs. agrigulture (the largest bulk consumer of water by far in our society).
