Today's Climate Change Much Faster Than Changes in Past 65 Million Years: Scientific American

Today's Climate Change Much Faster Than Changes in Past 65 Million Years: Scientific American | Sustainability & Education | Scoop.it

"The climate is changing at a pace that's far faster than anything seen in 65 million years, a report out of Stanford University says. The amount of global temperature increase and the short time over which it's occurred create a change in velocity that outstrips previous periods of warming or cooling, the scientists said in research published in today's Science.

'If global temperatures rise 1.5 degrees Celsius over the next century, the rate will be about 10 times faster than what's been seen before,' said Christopher Field, one of the scientists on the study. 'Keeping the temperature increase that small will require aggressive mitigation,' he said." - Anne C. Mulkern

Cheap Nanotech Filter Clears Hazardous Microbes and Chemicals from Drinking Water: Scientific American | Sustainability & Education | Scoop.it

"About 780 million people—a tenth of the world’s population—do not have access to clean drinking water. Water laced with contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, lead and arsenic claims millions of lives each year. But an inexpensive device that effectively clears such contaminants from water may help solve this problem." http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=cheap-nanotech-filter-water&WT.mc_id=SA_Facebook

Green Ninja - A Climate Action Super Hero

Green Ninja - A Climate Action Super Hero | Sustainability & Education | Scoop.it

The Green Ninja project is a collaborative effort between scientists, educators, and artists to create compelling experiences that illustrate the connections between humans and our changing climate. The goal is to inspire personal action to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. The project is based at San Jose State University (SJSU) and includes faculty from the College of Science, College of Humanities and the Arts, and Spartan Film Studios. The Green Ninja concept was created by Babak Sarrafan, professor of film at SJSU.

The Green Ninja is a climate-action superhero who fights global warming by inspiring informed personal action. A series of webisodes highlight the adventures of the Green Ninja as he negotiates some of the trickiest areas in climate science. Accompanying resources highlight the facts behind the webisodes and offer more detailed science for the interested individual. Also available, are educational resources for teachers to bring the Green Ninja into the classroom.

Kandy Gatfield's curator insight, April 24, 2014 11:54 PM

Tamyka Mills's curator insight, June 6, 2014 1:02 AM

The 'Green Ninja - A Climate Action Super Hero' is a program organised to demonstrate the connection between humans and the changing climate facing our world. the aim of the project is to produce scenarios that will people into changing and as a result reducing the green house gas emission. This website is a great resource for implementation into the classroom because it appeals to students with a character such as a super hero who is fighting against crime (global warming). the website provides not only video for students to watch but also facts behind the videos. The website also provides a teachers space where resources and activities are provided so that the teacher can incorporate the learning from the webpage to the classroom to further develop the knowledge of Global warming and the need to reduce it. This webpage is an excellent resources for teachers and students learning about sustainability in the classroom, it is engaging and fun as well as educational.

This website aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Sustainability where students learn and understand that the sustainability of ecological, social and economic systems is achieved through informed individual and community action that values local and global equity and fairness across generations into the future. (ACARA, 2014).

Students also engage in the Australian Curriculum: Technologies framework where they recognize the factors, including sustainability that impact on products, services and environments (ACTDEK010) (ACARA, 2014).
