"Since the introduction of the disease model, it has gained wide consensus in the scientific and therapeutic communities, although not in the public at large."
There is wide agreement among researchers and clinicians about alcoholism as a brain disease , yet it is still often regarded as a moral problem in the community at large. This study examined a random sample of 881 articles in four major American newspapers and found that only seven characterized alcoholism as a disease. The authors note that in an age of constant access to information, the media have great influence over public opinion and thus, the moral evaluaton of alcoholism that they are promoting may "permit social policies to neglect treatment endeavors and advances in the field of addiction". They suggest that the scientific and treatment community advance a "biosociogenic model" of alcoholism that supports the disease concept of alcoholism and explains the biological and social factors that influence its development and also emphasizes patients' responsibility to seek treatment. Their hope is that this model will shift the focus from blame to responsibility and have more power to penetrate media sterotypes.
