A recent article by Susan Laird in the Mountain Democrat from Placerville California, extolls her experience with Straw Bale Gardening. "For five years, I’ve enjoyed success in this unique gardening format, pioneered by horticulturalist Joel Karsten in the 1990s. This virtually weed-free method is fantastic for areas with poor or rocky soil. There is little bending. And some of the vegetables are almost too pretty to pick."

Between the Rows: Tips for using straw bales in your garden | Straw Bale Gardening | Scoop.it

Joel Karsten's insight:

Sometimes the best gardeners still need guidance when they try something new. As the old saying goes, "the Doctor makes the worst patient!" Even someone who understands traditional gardening methods very well, still need to wrap their mind around the Straw Bale Gardening method, and understand the process of conditioning the bales prior to planting. Without proper preparation the garden is almost always doomed to failure.

A recent article by Mary Hall in the DAILY JOURNAL from Kankakee Illinois speculates that: You might have seen it pop up on your Pinterest feed — cabbage, herbs or even flowers grown out of straw bales. “It’s the hot new gardening trend,” said Holly Froning, program coordinator for the master gardeners for the University of Illinois Extension. But this is more than just a trend, Froning added, at a seminar at the Bourbonnais Public Library last week.

21 businesses help La Crosse County achieve silver level for wellness

Emily Melby, registered dietician and wellness coordinator at Allergy Associates in Onalaska, picks tomatoes in the allergy care provider’s straw bale vegetable garden Tuesday. Allergy Associates is one of 21 companies honored Tuesday for participation in the Well County Workplace program.

Joel Karsten's insight:

Imagine a world where doctors prescribed "one dose of a garden" for a pre-diabetes patient. They get a $100 voucher and pick their gardening supplies at the local garden center. Six bales, fertilizer, 18 plants/seedpacks a couple of cattle panels, and a sheet of instructions. Now they get excersize, eat better, even accomplish something great doing a new hobby. They get healthier without even realizing what happened, no diets or programs, it is simply a life changing prescription! Talk about preventative medicine! I call this UPSTREAM healthcare, and it is the answer to so many of the huge problems our country faces with diseases related to what food people are eating. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and even depression, can all be directly traced to the diet, and treating these diseases is draining our countries resources fast. Lets change that, encourage your friends to grow a garden...a straw bale garden is a great way to start.

Joel Karsten's insight:

Gardening with kids is so important. They absorb so much information and the benefits of a few hours spent teaching them about planting and harvesting will stick with them. Some of my earliest and most lasting memories are of gardening with my grandma when I was very young. Stepping on things and pulling up "weeds" that turned out to not be weeds but rather the actual crops she had planted, were all part of the learning experience. Straw Bales eliminated the potential to step on plants, and without much weeding, the success rate goes up dramatically. Try it, you'll discover how much kids enjoy it, and how excited they are to eat what they've grown. Even opening up new opportunities for nutritious vegetables to sneak into their diets!

MUST SEE Spring Growing Season 2018 Reviews! Straw Bale Gardens Complete

https://amzn.to/2J1qlto - Straw Bale Gardens Complete Cool Springs Press
Joel Karsten's insight:

Who knew robots were doing Straw Bale Gardening. The suggestion that starting earlier will give more time for conditioning, clearly indicates a lack of understanding about the process. Cold air prevents bacteria growth, which is how the bale becomes conditioned. Once warmer air arrives it takes very little time, less than a couple of days, to complete the colonization of the bales by bacteria, but if one starts when it is still cool, the bales may be soaked with cold water by the time the warmer days arrive and the whole process takes longer. Please wait until 20 days prior to your average last frost date and then begin conditioning. This will put you in a great window for warmer weather and bacteria will flourish quickly.
