(UPDATED) Earlier this week, blogger Paul Resnikoff of Digital Music News used isolated statistics obtained from TuneCore to prove an oversimplified claim that "99.875% of Tunecore artists are making less than minimum wage". According to DMN, the solution for developing artists is "a day job or subsidizing parents to keep the ship afloat."
TuneCore CEO Jeff Price responds: Before I say another word, yes, I know I'm rising to the bait. I know this response means more eyeballs for Digital Music News – a semi-legitimate music industry blog that tends to be sensational to drive eyeballs. I know that Paul Resnikoff’s constant personal attacks on TuneCore and me are a goad and good for his web traffic. Okay, sometimes the only way to refute a gambit is to accept it. If this means more people paying attention to Paul's site and generating revenue for his ad-supported business model, I guess he wins that round.
The music subscription service Spotify reports it is bringing apps to its desktop software, an add-on model that may extend to its mobile strategy. The music service will soon allow users to add to their player/library software apps.
For those of you who follow the Grammy's, below is a list of this year's nominees from the only category worth caring about. I still don't get their qualification calendar, mixing releases from two different calendar years. In fact, it irritates me so much that the Grammy's have become irrelevant to me....but that's me.
Several years ago, Dr. Steven Sirr decided to marry his two passions: CT scans and violins. But not just any violin — a 307-year-old Stradivarius, one of the most prized instruments in the world. Sirr has collaborated with a few violin makers to build their own Stradivarius using the scans.
The music service has scheduled a press event to announce a 'new direction' for the company, and the theories abound about what's coming. We'll bring you the news as it happens. Read this blog post by Greg Sandoval on Media Maverick.
To make the monthly minimum wage of $1,160, a musician needed to sell 143 self-pressed compact discs. To make that from Spotify, they would need people to stream their songs more than 4 million times -- not humanly possible unless you happen to be Lady Gaga.
This article expresses Mr. O'brien's point of view about if using Spotify or not, harms artists. Mr. O'brien explained how Spotify is actually creating awareness, bringing back all the youth who did not buy music anymore, by providing them a new way of being customers. I think this supports my topic by showing how this service is changing the industry itself little by little by re introducing the investment in the music industry.

Are you one of those folks who still buys music on vinyl? Well, better make some shelf space because "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" soundtrack is coming and it's fucking massive.
Twitter-happy Trent Reznor teased fans a bit more today, tweeting "Working with @rob_sheridan and Neil Kellerhouse on a cool package to house the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack's SIX vinyls." Whoa wait, 6 LPs? There's a very good reason for that. Earlier this month, Reznor revealed that he's created a ton of music for the movie, tweeting "It's clocking in at two hours and forty-some odd minutes! We've lost our minds. Clear some disk space!" If that jibes with what we've heard about the running time for the movie, it pretty much means the score will be constant throughout and ever changing or Reznor has created a boatload of work that won't be used.
