How Crowdsourced Curation Helps Sellers and Buyers Find Their Perfect Match Faster

How Crowdsourced Curation Helps Sellers and Buyers Find Their Perfect Match Faster | Social Media, Internet, Content, Curation | Scoop.it

Robin Good's curator insight, November 17, 2013 1:18 PM

Here is a great example of how the spontaneous content curation efforts by individual users of a marketplace can provide significant benefits both to the marketplace sellers as well to all buyers.

On ThemeForest, which is one of the largest and best catalogues of web site themes and designs, you can find an endless number of curated collections of templates, image sets, presentation decks and others resources (like video footage or soundtracks) for publishing quality content on the web. In fact, there are so many of them that the main problem for whoever goes to shop there, is the time needed to search and find what may best fit his needs.

But thanks to a community feature called "collections", any registered user can collect and organize individual themes found on ThemeForest into individual collections which can be shared with everyone publicly (or kept private).

Here some great examples:

The ensuing benefit for the users of the marketplace is the ability to find more rapidly valuable items within the ocean of options available.

As a consequence also whoever runs Themeforest benefits from more sales and less time spent by new buyers in finding what they are looking for.

But there's more.

Since ThemeForest is part of a larger network of design resources that includes video assets (VideoHive), graphic resources (Graphic River), design apps (CodeCanyon) and several others, the collections can and do often include assets coming from the other sites of the network facilitating serendpitous discovery for buyers of other useful products.

Finally, individual merchants selling on the Envato network can curate their own collections showcasing their best work according to specific uses and applications.

A great example of how curation can significantly help online sales in situations where there is a very large number of products or services on sale.

Technologies For Patient Engagement

Technologies For Patient Engagement | Social Media, Internet, Content, Curation | Scoop.it

It is generally assumed that technology assists individuals in improving the quality of their lives. However, the impact of new technologies and media on well-being and positive functioning is still somewhat controversial.

In a paper on HealthAffairs, authors Guendalina Graffigna*, Serena Barello and Giuseppe Riva propose using the “positive technology” approach to influence three dimensions of health experience—affective quality (hedonic), actualization (heudaimonic), and connectedness (social or interpersonal)—that they consider crucial for fostering patient engagement through e-health interventions

In the positive technology approach, patient engagement is achieved by structuring the experience using a goal, rules, and a feedback system; using multimedia and interactive data to provide additional information about the patient’s options; and replacing a real-world experience with a synthetic one, with the help of virtual reality.

Positive technology easily supports strategies like the “choice architecture” of Robert Nease and coauthors (Feb 2013) to overcome cognitive issues.

Also, positive technology is able to augment patients’ experience in health decisions by making them more aware of their choices and offering different shared virtual spaces that support them in making the choice that best reflects their perspective.

The Positive Technology Approach is introduced in the paper http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22149077?dopt=Abstract which also touches upon Positive Psychology.

WatsonPaths : Natural interaction between physicians, data and EMRs

WatsonPaths : Natural interaction between physicians, data and EMRs | Social Media, Internet, Content, Curation | Scoop.it

After a year-long research collaboration with faculty, physicians and students at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, IBM Research has unveiled two cognitive computing technologies that can be used by Watson, and are expected to help physicians make more informed and accurate decisions faster and to cull new insights from electronic medical records (EMR).

The projects known as “WatsonPaths” and “Watson EMR Assistant” will create technologies that can be used by Watson in the domain of medicine.

With the WatsonPaths project, IBM scientists have trained the system to interact with medical domain experts in a way that’s more natural for them, enabling the user to more easily understand the structured and unstructured data sources the system consulted and the path it took in offering an option. The Watson EMR Assistant project aims to enable physicians to uncover key information from patients’ medical records, in order to help improve the quality and efficiency of care.

"Through our research collaboration with Cleveland Clinic, we've been able to significantly advance technologies that Watson can leverage to handle more and more complex problems in real time and partner with medical experts in a much more intuitive fashion. These are breakthrough technologies intended to assist future versions of Watson products." said Eric Brown, IBM Research Director of Watson Technologies.

Content Curation: Understanding the Why and How - a Research Study

Via Robin Good
Deanna Dahlsad's curator insight, October 15, 2013 3:59 PM

Robin Good  of Content Curation World breaks the findings down thus:

a) what people curate as relevant is not generally among the top ranked results according to popular metrics. Good stuff is not the same as what is considered normally popular or authoritative stuff.

b) content curation allows a community to synchronize around specific issues and subjects (as anticipated by Clay Shirky)

c) better and more appreciated curation is of the "structured" kind, providing additional info, meta-data and categorization.

d) curators that are highly appreciated are characterized by consistent activity and by a variety of interests (or viewpoints under the same theme) that they are capable to cover.

This is rather my experience; however, I usually explain it to my clients this way:

a) You can be doing an excellent job, but never receive the recognition, popularity, or traffic you deserve. That doesn't mean you won't be appreciated greatly by the smaller group of people who do find/read your curated works.

b) No matter the popularity of your curation, you can build and have conversations -- but remember, community cultivation not only requires additional time, but a different skill set.

c) If you're going to do it, do it well. Use tools, such as labels and tags, and *always* provide context as well as proper credits and links.

d) Consistent activity is nearly as important as showing some personality along with your knowledge. Your topic may be narrowly focused, but offer additional topics and information about you personally (not just professionally) so that people get a sense of you.

Internet and Social Media For Health-Related Information and Communication in Health Care: Preferences of the Dutch General Population

Internet and Social Media For Health-Related Information and Communication in Health Care: Preferences of the Dutch General Population | Social Media, Internet, Content, Curation | Scoop.it

Since the arrival of social media interventions for health-related purposes, it has become clear that not all these interventions are actually successful. Although no studies exist that have investigated this problem for social media, eHealth literature, which overlaps with social media because both involve technology, could provide some insight into this problem.

It is known that interventions are often not successful and/or the attrition rates may be high.

Several explanations for unsuccessful use have been described:
(1) technology features (eg, imperfections of the technology),
(2) inadequate reimbursement or legislation issues,
(3) poor coordination and introduction of tools, and
(4) personal characteristics of the intended use.

Personal characteristics seem to be particularly relevant because they concern the end-users of the tool. Examples of such characteristics, which are known to significantly influence use, are negative attitude toward technology, the extent to which a person feels he has the skills and expertise to be a competent caregiver, and age.

Therefore, determining the preferences or needs of potential users of tools is an important step in implementation. Although studies have assessed patients’ preferences regarding the Internet in health care (eg, the preferred language on websites, the preferences of a Web-based intervention, preferences regarding social media and asthma patients, or the needs of elderly patients regarding eHealth ), less is known about the preferences or needs of consumers or the general public, especially regarding social media.

A survey showed that 32% of all respondents (US adults) had used social media for health care purposes at one time or another. Further insights, however, are lacking.

Questions that arise in this context are:

Where do people obtain online health-related information?

Where do they connect with peers?

Are they willing to ask their doctor questions using a webcam?

And are there differences between different groups of the population (eg, by gender, age, or education)?

According to Ina Steiner on eCommerceBytes.com eBay has hired Michael Phillips Moskowitz to act as Chief Curator and Editorial Director and will be launching in the coming weeks its own curated collections features.

To see some of the upcoming curation features that eBay is going to offer to facilitate recommendations and trusted shopping among eBay 120 million active users, go and check out http://www.ebay.com/usr/ohjoystudio who is likely a beta user having already access to them.

"On her eBay Profile page, you can see her collections presented in very much the style of Pinterest boards."

Curated shopping collections are a powerful trust-enhancing method to help buyers share their know-how while helping others make more informed choices. eBay is only one among many other large online e-shops (Etsy and Amazon have both recently introduced similar features) to make curation features available to its users.

Interesting. Informative. 7/10
