AUSTIN, TEXAS (July 2, 2013) -- Kimbia announced today that the 2013 Georgetown University Alumni Association City Challenge giving day to support undergraduate scholarships raised $529,278 in 24 hours using the company's best-of-breed fundraising solution.
"The innovative technology platform was the foundation we needed to build out a robust and focused day of giving to drive donor participation for Georgetown and fundraise for student scholarships," said Georgetown University'sJoannah Pickett, senior director, annual fund. "Their platform enabled us to reach our donors across all online channels, and the team was available to give us the answers we needed in real time. This was a great new initiative for Georgetown, and we were pleased to partner with Kimbia on delivering this fun and exciting giving effort and look forward to what we can do together in the future."
The online giving day produced impressive results:
Driving donor participation was a key goal, and the alumni association had its sights set on getting 500 donors to make a gift. The end result was a total of 1,514 donors, of which 898 were new donors in the fiscal year.
21 undergraduate scholarships of $25,000 each will be funded with the money raised.
$91.49: Average online donation.
$220,000: Matching gifts total, which added excitement and inspiration to the City Challenge.
2,100 unique visitors visited the website over 24 hours, extending the reach of the university's scholarship message.
Organized by the Georgetown University Annual Fund and funded by the Georgetown University Alumni Association, the giving event started at midnightEST on Wednesday, May 15, and ran for a full day. The one day donation challenge to increase donor participation and raise funds for student scholarships, sparked healthy competition between the school's seven largest domestic undergraduate alumni markets: New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and Washington, D.C. Competition was measured by donor participation rates among alumni from the period between July 1, 2012, and May 15, 2013, with the giving day as a push toward the end of the fiscal year. Chicago came away as the winning city with 37.41 percent of Georgetown undergraduate alumni there donating, and a $25,000 scholarship will be named for the city for the 2013-14 academic year.
The City Challenge is the latest instance of Kimbia's fundraising solutions exercised successfully in the higher education sector. Kimbia's online solutions work seamlessly in conjunction with traditional fundraising methods to inspire first-time or renewing donors and to increase overall giving. A push via social media by alumni volunteer online ambassadors -- leveraged tools like Facebook-ready images and sample text for posts and tweets -- drove excitement for the giving day and linked potential donors to the website's donation page. Donors responded positively, spreading the word about the event throughout the day. One alumna even tweeted, "Just made a gift for @2006hoyas & @GUAlumni #GUCityChallenge. Love my alma mater's innovative fundraising efforts."

What is the first thing that you think when you see a man on a street corner asking for money for his next meal?Seven-year-old Will Lourcey jumped into action! Instead of joining a book club for his summer vacation, he started FROGS Dinner Club, Friends Reaching Our Goals, a community outreach program that gathers young kids together to plan fun events that raise money, awareness and help feed hungry children who don’t have a warm, healthy meal on their dinner table.
As of today, on behalf of Frogs Dinner Club Will has amazingly prepared over 175,000 meals for hungry children through Tarrant Area Food Bank, packaged 50,000 backpacks for the Backpacks for Kids Program and helped serve 10,000 families through Mobile Food Pantry. The Frog Dinner Club motto is to have fun while helping others, and that’s just what Will has done.
Websites now let people ask for charitable support for their own causes, but some fear that such sites will drain donations from established nonprofits.
“Crowdfunding is particularly attractive to younger donors who are looking for a more direct connection to the causes and people they’re supporting,” said Katherina M. Rosqueta, executive director of the Center for High Impact Philanthropy at the University of Pennsylvania. “I think of it as a tool, one which might bring stories and issues to particular donors who wouldn’t otherwise be aware and prompt them to give.”
In three weeks, the nonprofit world will be promoting a vast non-commercial response to the holiday shopping season that will simultaneously - its planners hope - expand charitable coffers and continue to build a new network for giving that counters the year-end explosion of consumerist buying and selling. In 2014, the global success of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge brought the concept of slacktivism to the centre of our attention. As millions poured water over their heads in the name of charity, opinion was divided on whether this was an empty gesture, with critics suggesting the campaign was all talk and no action.…
