Before purchasing an “Internet of things” (IoT) device — a thermostat, camera or appliance made to be remotely accessed and/or controlled over the Internet — consider whether you can realistically care for and feed the security needs of yet another IoT thing. After all, there is a good chance your newly adopted IoT puppy will be:


-chewing holes in your network defenses;
-gnawing open new critical security weaknesses;
-bred by a vendor that seldom and belatedly patches;
-tough to wrangle down and patch


In April 2014, researchers at Cisco alerted HVAC vendor Trane about three separate critical vulnerabilities in their ComfortLink II line of Internet-connected thermostats. These thermostats feature large color LCD screens and a Busybox-based computer that connects directly to your wireless network, allowing the device to display not just the temperature in your home but also personal photo collections, the local weather forecast, and live weather radar maps, among other things.

According to Trend Micro mobile threats analyst Veo Zhang, the problem lies in the fact that there are many apps out there - very popular apps, even - that use an older version, vulnerable of the portable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) SDK library (aka libupnp). The library is used to implement media playback or NAT traversal.

The security of the Internet of Things, vehicles, airports and healthcare will be part of a wider focus of EU-backed infosec organisation ENISA's work next year.

In an announcement by the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA), a new work programme was detailed which will include research into the security of smart buildings, cars, healthcare and IoT security. The announcement was made during ENISA's Cyber Security Month.

It said it would continue “its work on established priorities such as the pan-European cyber-security exercises, critical information infrastructure protection (CIIP), support for implementation of Security & Data Breach notification obligations, the EU Cybersecurity Month and the work that ENISA has done in supporting the CERT community, while broadening its scope in areas including, smart cars, smart airports and smart hospitals, with new studies in health and security of IoT”.

Auch bei Babyphones geht der Trend zu smarten Geräten mit Kamera und WLAN-Anschluss. Sicherheitsforscher warnen: Einige Geräte lassen sich einfach hacken und geben den Blick frei ins Kinderzimmer.


Babyphones mit Kamera und W-LAN-Anschluss sind gegen Hackerangriffe teilweise nicht gesichert. Das geht aus einem Bericht der Sicherheitsfirma Rapid7 hervor. Die Experten entdeckten sieben Babyphones, die gegen Attacken mehr oder weniger schutzlos sind.


Ohne besondere technische Fähigkeiten und ohne größeren Aufwand, sei es möglich, auf die Geräte zuzugreifen. Angreifer bräuchten nichts weiter als einen Browser. Die Vorgehensweise sei "trivial" für jeden fachkundigen Hacker, so die Experten.

In a recent attack the company has tracked 559 edge devices — devices that provide an entry point into enterprise or service provider core networks — that were actively being exploited, with more than half located in the US, China, Bulgaria and Russia.

The GSMA Association has published new guidelines designed to promote the secure development and deployment of services in the growing Internet of Things (IoT) market.

Separate security guidelines have been offered for the IoT service providers, network operators, and IoT device manufacturers.

The guidelines have been developed in consultation with the mobile industry and offers IoT service providers and the wider IoT ecosystem practical advice on tackling common cybersecurity threats, as well as data privacy issues associated with IoT services.

Rapid7 researchers have found a slew of new vulnerabilities in nine modern and widely available baby monitors, which they say highlights the risks in the rapid expansion in similar internet-connected devices.

A researcher who has already found security holes impacting GM cars, has turned his attention to the iOS apps of other vehicle manufacturers.


Over the last week, Kamkar has analyzed the iOS apps of BMW’s Remote, Mercedes-Benz mbrace, Chrysler Uconnect, and the alarm system Viper’s Smartstart, and found that all of those internet-connected vehicle services are vulnerable to the attack he used to hack GM’s OnStar RemoteLink app.


"If you’re using any of these four apps, I can automatically get all of your log-in information and then indefinitely authenticate as you," says Kamkar. "These apps give me different levels of control of your car. But they all give me some amount of control."

On Tuesday, we were terrified by Wired’s report on car hacking, in which a Jeep Grand Cherokee was remotely controlled and then stalled by security hackers miles away.


To be extra safe, however, it’s also issuing a “voluntary safety recall” for 1.4 million vehicles in the US. Potentially vulnerable owners will be sent a USB device of some sort that will implement additional barriers to prevent further exploits. FCA is also creating a dedicated security team to monitor software development and potential vulnerabilities.
