Cyber crime as a Market

Cyber crime as a Market | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Information security experts often talk about the costs of cybercrime to businesses, but a new report from Russia quantifies how much criminals make in the cybercrime market.

Say “cyber crime market” to the average MBA in America and they probably think you mean the market for security solutions to prevent cyber crime. In Russia the term "cyber crime market" apparently means the amount of money to be made from cyber crime.

===> In 2011, that amount was $12.5 billion <=== according a report recently published by Moscow-based Group-IB. Their analysts concluded that about one third of that total was “earned” by Russian-speaking hackers, and about half of that was earned by hackers inside Russia.

FBI Charges Man In $1 Million Stock-Fraud Hacking Scheme | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

According to authorities, Murmylyuk was part of a gang that beginning in late 2010, gained access to online trading accounts at Scottrade, e*Trade, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and other brokerage firms and conducted a series of sham trades.

Once the hackers controlled the accounts, they used stolen identities to open additional accounts at other brokerage houses, and then initiated "unprofitable and illogical securities trades" that benefited the attackers.

They also changed the phone numbers and email addresses on file to prevent victims from being notified of the illegal trades.

If convicted, Murmylyuk faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Everything you thought you knew about cybercrims is WRONG

Everything you thought you knew about cybercrims is WRONG | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

Assumptions about cyber-criminals are all wrong, according to a study that argues many fraudsters are middle aged and possess only rudimentary IT skills - contrary to the elite bedroom teen hackers portrayed in movies.

The research, led by criminologist Dr Michael McGuire of The John Grieve Centre for Policing and Security at London Metropolitan University, blames 80 per cent of cybercrime on your common-or-garden gangsters. Contrary to Hollywood film scripts, cybercrime is far from the preserve of tech-savvy youths - nearly half (43 per cent) of cyber-crooks are over 35 years old, and less than a third (29 per cent) are under 25.

More cyber-crooks (11 per cent) are over 50 than youngsters aged between 14 and 18, who make up only eight per cent of e-crims, according to the doctor and his team.

Malicious software meets BYOD

Malicious software meets BYOD | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Bringing together two separate pieces of security research reveals vulnerability to cybercrime on an alarming scale.

When trying to get a handle on cybercrime today, consider this: In millions of homes across America, unencrypted company information is sitting on unprotected desktops and laptops – in the hands of employees who have had no security training.

At the same time, we see software being deployed that can stealthily and remotely scan the hard drives of those machines for specific data, and secretly transmit it back to the scanner.

What is the definition of cybercrime?

What is the definition of cybercrime? | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
What is the definition of cybercrime?

Two weeks ago, the "Cybersecurity Act of 2012" was introduced in the U.S. Senate.

The bill (S.2105) is designed to protect critical infrastructure such as water, energy, and transportation. It directs the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to coordinate with network operators on developing security standards. A related bill, the "Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2012" (S.2102) was introduced on February 13th.

Naturally, civil liberties group such as the EFF and EPIC examined the legislation. They say it's too broad.

CNET's Elinor Mills: Civil liberties groups: Proposed cybersecurity bill is too broad

Whatever else there is to say about the Cybersecurity Act of 2012, it was a bit surprising to read in CNET's article that "there is no definition of 'crime'." After all, the definition of "cybercrime" has been established for years now.
