No More Ransom, conceived as a European resource, is adding new partners and new decryption tools in a boost to its now global anti-ransomware campaign.
Cheesy graphics notwithstanding, the site contains some useful tools. No More Ransom, launched less than a year ago, is going from strength to strength as more partners from both law enforcement and the private sector join the programme. No More Ransom was unveiled in July 2016 by the Dutch National Police, Europol, Intel Security and Kaspersky Lab in what was hailed as a new level of partnership between the public and private sectors to combat ransomware.

Two companies have discovered that someone had covertly installed malware on 38 devices used by their employees. According to security firm Check Point, the installation of the malicious apps took place somewhere along the supply chain, after phones left the manufacturer's factory and before they arrived at the two companies. Ransomware is malware that locks your computer and mobile devices or encrypts your electronic files. When this happens, you can’t get to the data unless you pay a ransom. However this is not guaranteed and you should never pay! Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren:

5 tips: avoid becoming a victim of ransomware Prevention is better than looking for a cure, and that's certainly true for ransomware. Here are our TOP 5 tips to keep your devices clear of ransomware: Make sure you're running a robust security solution that covers all your devices (PCs, Macs, smartphones, and tablets) and provides protection. F-Secure SAFE protects against all the known ransomware threats that are out there, and it can block brand new zero-day threats as well. As new ransomware variants keep popping up lately, this is important.
Take regular backups of your data. Store the backups offline, so that they can't get infected. And test restoring them from time to time to make sure that they really work. With good backups, if you do get hit, you can get back on your feet faster without having to fork over cash to the criminals. Keep the software on all your devices up to date to prevent exploits. If you are uncertain how to keep everything up-to-date, you may consider utilizing a tool that identifies old software versions and suggests updates. One example of a product like this is F-Secure BOOSTER premium. Be extra careful with email attachments, especially with ZIP files and Office documents (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Don't open email attachments that are sent by someone you don't know. Also disable macro scripts from any Office files you receive via email. Limit the use of browser plugins. Disable commonly exploited ones such as Flash Player and Silverlight when you're not using them. You can do this through your web browser under the plugin settings.

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: http://www.scoop.it/t/securite-pc-et-internet/?tag=RANSOMWARE

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren:

F-Secure's Mikko Hypponen tells SCMagazineUK.com how the company is now tracking ransomware Bitcoin wallets to reveal the huge amounts of money the gangs are making.
Could we ever put an end the blight of ransomware? Are we about to witness a ransomware unicorn? According to Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of Finnish F-Secure, we are. But there's a caveat.
A unicorn is a startup business which has received the valuation of a US$ 1 billion dollars (£757 million) or more. Think AirBnB, Uber, or Spotify.
In an interview with SCMagazineUK.com, Hypponen explained: "Bitcoin is based on Blockchain, and Blockchain is a public ledger of transactions. So all Bitcoin transactions are public. Now, you don't know who is who. But we can see money moving around, and we can see the amounts."
Bitcoin has not only changed the economics of cyber-crime by providing crooks with an encrypted, nearly anonymous payment system autonomous from any central bank. It's also changed researchers' ability to track how much money criminals are making.
Hypponen detailed how F-Secure is tracking over 100 wallets, the biggest of which contains over 12,000 Bitcoins (over £5 million). And interestingly, Hypponen says there appears to be a lot of gangs who aren't cashing out. There’s a new crypto-ransomware brand in-the-wild called “UltraDeCrypter”.
It’s an evolution of CryptXXX that is being dropped by the Angler exploit kit. In our tests, using an older CryptXXX “identification code” with UltraDeCrypter’s decryption service portal redirected to an older CryptXXX portal. So there’s evidence the back ends are interlinked.
Regarding the payment support pages… the number of attempted localizations is a very telling of UltraDeCrypter’s ambitions. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: http://www.scoop.it/t/ict-security-tools/?tag=Ransomware http://www.scoop.it/t/securite-pc-et-internet/?tag=RANSOMWARE
