High-ranking Eurocrats are expected to begin crisis talks on digital surveillance with American officials on Monday. Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaitė, whose country will take up the EU presidency today , said she hoped to piggyback discussions on Edward Snowden and the PRISM system on top of trade talks. The EU and the US will start hammering out the details of a transatlantic trade and investment partnership on Monday, which Eurocrats hope could create thelargest free trade zone in the world.

The European Parliament will vote — ironically of all days, on U.S. Independence Day on July 4 — whether existing data sharing agreements between the two continents should be suspended, following allegations that U.S. She told her colleagues: "I do not want to hear the argument of national security anymore," she added. "Sorry, bugging the EU offices in Washington is a matter of 'national security'? Blanket surveillance of millions of innocent citizens is a matter of 'national security'? I do not buy that anymore."

New allegations also suggest EU computer networks were hacked The US intelligence service may have placed bugs in European Union (EU) buildings as part of its PRISM spying program, it has emerged from documents released by whistle-blower Edward Snowden. Documents seen by the German newspaper Spiegel suggest that not only were bugs installed in the EU's offices in Washington, but also that the building's computer network was infiltrated. Through this, surveillance teams had the capability to listen to discussions in several offices belonging to the EU, as well as being able to access emails and documents on computers.

Whistleblower leaves Hong Kong. Former United States National Security Agency (NSA) employee turned whistleblower Edward Snowden has reportedly revealed attacks by his former employer on network operator Pacnet. Speaking to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, Snowden said Pacnet's computers in Hong Kong were attacked by America but did not provide information as to the motive nor whether Pacnet suffered any damage in the now-closed hacking operation.

In the resolution, approved by 483 votes to 98 with 65 abstentions, MEPs express serious concern over PRISM and other surveillance programmes, strongly condemn spying on EU representations and call on the US authorities to provide them with full information on these allegations without further delay. Parliament also expresses grave concern about allegations that similar surveillance programmes are run by several EU member states, such as the UK, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany and Poland. It urges them to examine whether those programmes are compatible with EU law. Stronger data safeguards urgently needed Parliament calls on EU countries to speed up their work on the whole data protection package and urges the Commission and the US authorities to resume negotiations on the data protection agreement without delay. ===> The final deal must ensure that EU citizens' access to the US judicial system is equal to that enjoyed by US citizens, it adds. <===

"Black-box" testing uncovers several ways the NSA could tap the popular service. As Soghoian and other critics admit, the end-to-end encryption included with iMessage may make it impossible for Apple to decrypt conversations, at least in some circumstances. But in the absence of key details that Apple has steadfastly declined to provide, customers who are especially concerned about their privacy would do well to assume otherwise.
