Building on the success of the Bathing Water Quality project, we wanted to explore what it could look like to make water quality information available to users who don't have a water-quality-science background. Water quality data allows consumers to ask "I want to go to a beach with clean bathing water".

Sea stars on both coasts of North America are dying en masse from a disease that kills them in a matter of days. Researchers are looking at various pathogens that may be behind what is known as sea star wasting syndrome, but they suspect that a key contributing factor is warming ocean waters.

More is coming. Maybe not more mammoth waves, such as the 25-footers that hit the Wedge this week, but more of the mammoth havoc that came with them. Ocean water pouring into streets and houses in Seal Beach – this isn’t the last time homeowners will see that. Cliffs carved out of the sand at Newport – beachgoers should get used to it.
