Have you ever tried to tie your shoe laces with one arm?

There are today over 30 spine surgical robots that are commercial or in development, and this one is coming out of Switzerland.

Last week LEM Surgical AG - a robotic startup founded in 2021 and named after a science fiction writer - announced FDA clearance for the 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺.

The team has been developing this hard-tissue surgical robot that is not like most solutions available today that feature 1 arm holding 1 tool for pedicle screw placement.

Dynamis is the first-of-its-kind multi-arm system designed to help perform various procedures, starting with spine surgery.

The goal is to provide a bilateral, full body coverage, instrument agnostic robotic platform that will be capable of assisting in all procedural steps.

The North Star being 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆.

Once the cart is rolled under the table, the 3 arms are deployed around the patient and the device uses more than 11 cameras to get a full understanding of what's happening outside and inside the patient.

The company plans a limited product launch in the US this year, and is currently raising a Series C round to support commercialization.

SkyWalker™ adopted into NICE guideline

Six systems for orthopaedic surgery have been given the green light by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) under its early value assessment programme, includes SkyWalker™, Mako and ROSA, etc.This is the first time that Chinese surgical robots have been recommended for use in the NHS.

SkyWalker™ has strong operability and adaptability, with a simple system installation process, smooth intraoperative operations, fast operation efficiency, reduced dependence on physician experience, decreased patient injuries, and accelerated patient recovery. Clinical data shows that the SkyWalker™'s accuracy in lower limb alignment, surgery time, blood loss, and postoperative knee joint clinical functional assessment are at an internationally leading level. SkyWalker™ assists in joint replacement surgeries by reducing the angle deviation of the replaced joint to within 0.5°, while also halving the surgery time and reducing blood loss by more than 30%.

SkyWalker™ has approved by NMPA、FDA、CE、TGA、ANVISA、MHRA、CDSCO、MHLW、CCPSA，and has been clinically applied in orthopedics, joint surgery, and sports medicine departments of 90 hospitals in more than 20 countries around the world, including China, the United States, Germany, Spain, and Brazil, assisting in the implementation of more than 2000 TKA surgeries.

“These innovative technologies can potentially transform orthopaedic surgical care in the NHS. The data gathered over the next three years will allow us to evaluate exactly how these technologies can improve patient care and help ensure NHS resources are directed toward interventions that deliver meaningful clinical benefits and long-term value to our health service,” commented Dr Anastasia Chalkidou, programme director of NICE’s HealthTech programme.

The ortho robotics market is still a frontier and not yet a battlefield. This chart offers a rare peek into a space that, until now, has operated with more mystery than clarity.

With no centralized claims data and fragmented reporting, understanding market leadership in orthopedic robotics has felt more like speculation than science.

But this slide changes that—at least directionally (*Shout out to Brandon Wade and the team at Health Advances for this graphic.)

By comparing publicly stated procedure volumes, we begin to see a clearer landscape. Stryker’s Mako remains the dominant force.

Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA and Smith+Nephew’s NAVIO/CORI have earned meaningful traction.

And perhaps most notably, Globus Medical’s ExcelsiusGPS is gaining ground fast—thanks to the transparency they've offered by releasing growth data others won’t.

It’s important to say: this is not an exact market share breakdown.

It doesn’t reflect total penetration, nor does it consider the nuances of hospital system contracts or implant alignment. But it does signal momentum—and momentum attracts money, talent, and market share.

What stands out is how underpenetrated the market still is.

For all the noise, the ASC (ambulatory surgery center) space is just getting started. And that’s where the battle will be won or lost.

The key question: will adoption follow legacy implant lines, or will open systems and robotics-native platforms (like those from THINK Surgical, Monogram, or even J&J’s VELYS) reset the playing field?

This market feels like soft-tissue robotics in 2005.

Back then, Intuitive’s da Vinci wasn’t yet the 800-pound gorilla.

Today, it dominates.

The race is on.

And with the convergence of robotics, AI, and patient-specific implants, we may be closer to the tipping point than we think.
