"Sustainability" has been one of the biggest — if not the biggest — buzzwords in the beauty industry for years. Efforts and entire marketing campaigns focused on refillable, recyclable and post-consumer recycled packaging, "clean" formulating, microplastics, carbon footprints, water waste, energy efficiency, supplier transparency and so forth have become abundant and commonplace. And all of these topics are important when it comes to answering consumers' calls for beauty products that create less waste. But there's also a less-discussed subject of arguably equal importance that some say is the new frontier of the sustainable beauty movement: biodiversity.
"Biodiversity is the variety of plants, animals and other living creatures on earth. We all rely on nature for the raw materials we need to sustain healthy lives. By caring for biodiversity, we're caring for ourselves," explains Lara Koritzke, communications and marketing director at the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), a nonprofit association that "promotes sourcing with respect" for corporations and makers of consumer goods.

Where plastics fail in biodegradability and recyclability, some companies are turning to paper packaging, which doesn’t entirely get brands out of the woods of meeting sustainability goals. Paper packaging, including cardboard, has been a part of cosmetics packaging for a long time as boxes and wrapping, but sustainability goals have been pushing companies to innovate and use paper and cardboard more prominently.
Packaging suppliers are expanded from the days of boxes to create paper tubes, bottles and other containers.

The aim of the coalition is to provide space for the world’s sustainable beauty brands to come together to discuss how to deliver their vision of “beauty for good”.
Davide Bollati, president of the sustainable haircare brand and B Corp Davines, is one of the founding members of the B Corp Beauty Coalition. He said that the idea formed after a number of beauty leaders got together and discussed the discomfort they felt around the social and environmental footprint being left by the beauty industry as a whole.
“We concluded that our respective solo efforts to enable positive change can be enhanced through a partnership of mutual commitment,” Bollati said.
