Crop Natural Just Launched The First COSMOS-Certified Line Of Cosmetics

Australian beauty brand Crop Natural has been serving us with green skin care since launching in the U.S. last November. And now? It’s introducing an organic line of cosmetics. Not only is the line completely organic and non-toxic, but it’s also the first to be COSMOS-certified.

EcoVadis's insight:

Cosmos is a private international organization that oversees the way a product is developed, from where a raw ingredient is sourced and farmed to each step in the production process—basically, it's the gold standard in certifying whether a product is truly "natural" or not.

Five major cosmetic categories — face cream, foundation, mascara, blush/bronzer and lipstick — contain at least one high risk commodity, according to an analysis by Verisk Maplecroft. The commodities are scored based on their environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk. About 30% of ingredients used in common cosmetic products come from mined or agricultural commodities.

EcoVadis's insight:

Consumers are increasingly demanding for natural ingredients in their cosmetics and transparency into sourcing creates challenges for procurement departments.

5 Ways Cosmetic Manufacturers Remain Compliant with Sage Enterprise Management for Cosmetics

5 Ways Cosmetic Manufacturers Remain Compliant with Sage Enterprise Management for Cosmetics | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - Cosmetics Industry | Scoop.it

Demonstrating compliance in cosmetics and personal care product manufacturing is a complex process due to the intricacies of its regulations. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the main body that oversees the sale of all cosmetic products in the US, but according to the agency’s own language, it does not grant approval for items before they enter the market. They do, however, have several stringent rules for what ingredients can be used in and even what constitutes a cosmetic product legally. .

EcoVadis's insight:

Noncompliance can bring a number of penalties for cosmetic manufacturers, including warning letters from the FDA, fines and even seizure of goods.

Transparency is extremely topical right now. More people want to know where their products are coming from. They also want sustainable and environmentally-friendly ingredients given some cosmetics can play a part in deforestation and lead to environmental damage.

As well as targeting emissions, the company promises to cut its deforestation rates by sustainably sourcing its palm oil.”

Your Beauty Products May Involve Human Rights Abuses

Your Beauty Products May Involve Human Rights Abuses | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - Cosmetics Industry | Scoop.it

One big ingredient of concern is cocoa, which shows up as cocoa seed butter or cocoa fruit powder on cosmetics ingredient lists. In two of its primary countries of origin, Ghana and Ivory Coast, there is “a ton of social risk,” Norris said. The most prevalent factor is child labor. Child labor has also been identified in the farming and production of shea butter, vanilla, copper, and silk “in the last five years in at least one of their major producing countries,” the report noted.

EcoVadis's insight:

What is missing is transparency about the sourcing of natural ingredients, which are also used in mainstream cosmetics.
