Ecocert believes in fair trade development in the cosmetics industry

Ecocert believes in fair trade development in the cosmetics industry | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - Cosmetics Industry | Scoop.it
Organic, natural and now fair trade: ethical channels are developing in the cosmetic sector to meet the demand of consumers who are hungry for more responsible beauty products and who are willing to improve their consumption habits. Ecocert is convinced of the development potential of fair trade practices in the beauty sector and is emphasising the advantages of the Fair For Life label, soon to be revised.
The pandemic has considerably impacted consumer habits. For more than 72% of French people, consuming less and better has become a requirement [1]. Inevitably, this consumption trend has impacted the cosmetics sector and brands have had to reinvent themselves. In 2021, the number of products certified organic or natural by Ecocert has increased by 30%. The French market for natural and organic cosmetics is also booming, with a growth of 12% in 2021, while sales of mainstream cosmetics are down by 6.1% [2].

PCR & Ocean-Bound Plastic Both Have a Place in Sustainable Beauty

PCR & Ocean-Bound Plastic Both Have a Place in Sustainable Beauty | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - Cosmetics Industry | Scoop.it
Big Plastic (and Big Oil) have a five-decade lead and massive economies of scale that will take a little longer to match in terms of costs and simplicity. But working with the right partners and openness to shaking up the status quo is paying off for brands willing to put their principles and profits on equal footing.

Beauty and personal care brands know that their customers are looking for more than just a potion for great looks, fewer wrinkles and luxurious locks — they also want to immerse themselves with brands that align with their values. Beauty products are costly items used daily, so the desire to feel good about looking good is natural.

Today’s beauty brands are finding a more sustainable future through packaging innovations

Today’s beauty brands are finding a more sustainable future through packaging innovations | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - Cosmetics Industry | Scoop.it
Beauty is notorious for its wasteful packaging. The industry produces more than 120 billion units of plastic packaging each year, according to Zero Waste Week. About 95% of that is discarded after use. Add to that miles of cellophane, paper waste and cardboard, and it becomes one of the worst offenders for the world’s waste problem.

For years beauty brands embedded products in excess packaging for two reasons: the perception that elaborate boxes and adornments equated to luxury and the need to protect against pilferage.

The personal care and beauty category is only one piece of a bigger problem. Each year 300 million tons of plastic are produced globally and only 16% of that is collected for recycling. Worse yet, only 12% is actually recycled, according to McKinsey & Company. Twenty-five percent is incinerated, 40% goes to landfills and 19% ends up as litter.

Sustainable packaging roundup

Sustainable packaging roundup | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - Cosmetics Industry | Scoop.it
More sustainable packaging is on the cosmetics industry agenda, and there are a number of options on the market today.
What qualifies as sustainable varies from market to market, company to company and consumer to consumer, but one of the main goals is to decrease or remove virgin plastic in a beauty brand's packaging.

But, when moving away from virgin plastic packaging, brands have to consider material performance, ease of decoration, transportation costs and logistics, as well as the social and environmental impacts that other materials may have.

Packaging suppliers and sustainability consultants advise companies to do a holistic analysis of how they need packaging to perform, how the benefits and drawbacks of a given supply chain fit into their sustainability goals and what else can be done to improve packaging sustainability, like changing product format or reducing the amount of packaging used.

Making cosmetic packaging with recycled plastic can avoid between 50% to 70% of CO2 emissions compared to a standard bottle. Hence, the demand for high-quality recycled plastics tends to increase as the main players in the global economy strive to reduce their environmental impact.

In order to secure their supplies recycled plastic for their packaging, L’Oréal has entered into a partnership agreement with Veolia at the global level. Veolia will thus supply the beauty giant with high-quality plastic obtained after processing waste materials derived from consumer packaging, especially plastic bottles. The waste material must be collected specifically to ensure the purity of the material and require “specific processing tools,” said Veolia in a statement.

Is ‘No Rinse’ Conditioner Really Better for the Environment?

Is ‘No Rinse’ Conditioner Really Better for the Environment? | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - Cosmetics Industry | Scoop.it
Garnier has been trying to green up its image for some time. In 2020, it released its Sustainability Progress Report, detailing its commitment to reducing plastic, using more recycled materials, and focusing on ingredients of “natural origin.” In 2021, it earned cruelty-free certification, and in the same year, it launched its first waterless shampoo bars. Now, the brand is promoting a new “sustainable” product innovation: No Rinse Conditioner.

According to the brand, its No Rinse Conditioner saves 100 liters of water per tube, and its carbon footprint is 92 percent smaller than its traditional wash-out options. (Garnier notes that 63 percent of a wash-out conditioner’s carbon footprint comes from water use.) It’s also packaged in a light-weight cardboard-integrated tube rather than a plastic bottle.

Limiting plastic and water use is definitely progress for a brand under one of beauty’s worst plastic pollution offenders. Its parent company L’Oréal used 140,000 tonnes of plastic in 2018.
