In 2013, I taught and lived in the favelas of Brazil as a Fund for Teachers Fellow. Every day, I walked home from school with Nicoli and Charles. I created this lesson to use in the elementary classroom. Teachers can create global competence within even the youngest students by sharing how different our walks home from school may be and yet how similar our lives still are.
Not to date ourselves, but we are children of the 80’s. We grew up watching shows like Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom and we know the National Geographic theme song better than the national anthem.
