National Science Foundation (NSF) News - New Research Suggests Bacteria Are Social Microorganisms - US National Science Foundation (NSF) | quest inspiration | Scoop.it

New research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology reveals that some unlikely subjects--bacteria--can have social structures similar to plants and animals.

The research shows that a few individuals in groups of closely related bacteria have the ability to produce chemical compounds that kill or slow the growth of other populations of bacteria in the environment, but not harm their own.

How Culture Drove Human Evolution | Conversation | Edge

How Culture Drove Human Evolution | Conversation | Edge | quest inspiration | Scoop.it

A commitment to something like anti-nepotism norms is something that runs against our evolutionary inclinations and our inclinations to help kin and to invest in long-term close relationships, but it's crucial for making a large-scale society run. Corruption, things like hiring your brother-in-law and feathering the nest of your close friends and relatives is what really tears down and makes complex societies not work very well. In this sense, the norms of modern societies that make modern societies run now are at odds with at least some of our evolved instincts.

Good mood foods: Some flavours in some foods resemble a prescription mood stabilizer | quest inspiration | Scoop.it

New evidence reveals the possibility of mood-enhancing effects associated with some flavors, stemming at least in part from natural ingredients bearing a striking chemical similarity to valproic acid, a widely used prescription mood-stabilizing drug, scientists reported here today. This effect joins those previously reported for chocolate, teas and some other known comfort foods.

The Beats: Remember the Tea

The Beats: Remember the Tea | quest inspiration | Scoop.it
Suzuki shared his feelings with Okamura about these young men. He thought Kerouac's biggest flaw was that he "misunderstood the essence of freedom . . . Freedom is from Dr. Suzuki's point of view [working] in the harness . . . and [Kerouac was unable] to overcome all of that and to understand it." According to Okamura, the point where the Beats fell short was in misunderstanding the essential Zen point that we are already free, and "it is the human mind that thinks we are not free . . . To look for freedom outside of our own original freedom is already an aberration of the mind . . . We are not apart in the original state." She felt the Beat generation thought they had to "liberate themselves from what was totally unnecessary."

Suzuki noted, "They are struggling, still rather superficially against democracy, bourgeois conformity, economic respectability, conventional middle-class consciousness, and other cognate virtues and vices of mediocrity. Because they are still 'rootless' . . . they find themselves floundering in the mud in their search for 'the only way through into truth [which] is by way of one's own annihilation: through dwelling a long time in a state of extreme and total humiliation.' They have not yet passed through their experiences of humiliation and affliction, and, I may add, revelation."

Free Won't: It May Be All That We Have (or Need)

Free Won't: It May Be All That We Have (or Need) | quest inspiration | Scoop.it

There's lots of research evidence demonstrating that many of our actions are not initiated consciously. We're not making conscious choices to act. That said, some of the strongest neuroscientific evidence indicates that our conscious choice is capable of stopping nonconsciously initiated action. Perhaps it's not a matter of free will, but "free won't," and this matters in terms of procrastination.

“you never run into breakthroughs when you say, ‘You can't do that.' You run into them when you've found something that doesn't make sense and you find a way to make it work. A breakthrough always starts with nonsense.” It is his willingness to follow his own instincts towards unorthodox solutions that had made Mr Rutan such a successful innovator. He doesn't care what other people think, and has always just gone his own way regardless."

Laughing at the Spirits in North Siberia: Is Animism Being Taken too Seriously? | e-flux

Laughing at the Spirits in North Siberia: Is Animism Being Taken too Seriously? | e-flux | quest inspiration | Scoop.it

We may ask whether the new animist studies are overstating the seriousness of the indigenous peoples’ own attitudes toward their spirited worlds. It is exactly here that we begin to glimpse the problem that motivates my writing this article. I am no longer convinced that seriousness as such lies at the heart of animism. Quite the contrary, it seems to me that underlying animistic cosmologies is a force of laughter, an ironic distance, a making fun of the spirits which suggests that indigenous animism is not to be taken very seriously at all.12 I think that we are facing a fundamental yet quite neglected problem here, and I will begin to explore it by drawing attention to a somewhat puzzling episode from my own fieldwork among the Yukaghirs, who are a small group of indigenous hunters living in northeastern Siberia....

Rebekah Shaman Trailer

"This story is also a warning from the Shaman to the West that we urgently need to change our relationship with each other, and with Mother Earth. Only by our choices can we end war and make this planet a Heaven on Earth. And yet change can only occur when each one of us takes the responsibility to change ourselves first. Now it is time to wake up and evolve consciously, to start shining our light and spreading our love. You do not need to go to the rainforest to find your divinity. It is found when we are truly happy and at peace with ourselves. It is an inner journey that is unique to each individual, a universal pilgrimage called life that we are all taking, consciously or unconsciously. We are not helpless. We are not caged. The path of conscious evolution is open to anyone who wishes to walk it."

Bullies squelched when bystanders intervene: study

Bullies squelched when bystanders intervene: study | quest inspiration | Scoop.it

Humans have evolved a genetically-controlled drive to help weaker individuals fight back against a bully. The drive to help the weaker group members led to a dramatic reduction in group inequality and eventually enabled humans to develop widespread cooperation, empathy, compassion and egalitarian moral values, according to the paper which appears today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Carl Gustav Jung on Individuation: Social responsibility that is devoid of self-reflection, may be all too hypocritical

"Every individual needs revolution, inner division, overthrow of the existing order, and renewal, but not by forcing these things upon his neighbours under the hypocritical cloak of Christian love or the sense of social responsibility or any of the other beautiful euphemisms for unconscious urges to personal power. Individual self-reflection, return of the individual to the ground of human nature, to his own deepest being with its individual and social destiny here is the beginning of a cure for that blindness which reigns at the present hour."

THE FEYNMAN SERIES (part 1) - Beauty

"Nature is there and she's going to come out the way she is.  Therefore when we go to investigate we shouldn't pre-decide what it is we are trying to do, except to find out more about it.  You see, one thing is: I can live with doubt and uncertaintay and not knowing. I think it is much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong.  I have approximate answers, and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I am not absolutely sure of anything, and there are many things I don't know anything about. But I don't have to know an answer, I am not frightened by not knowing things..."
