The latest Trend Report from ScanLife, a mobile marketing company, shows that the popularity of QR codes and UPC barcodes is growing in the U.S. These codes have been around for decades but consumers have only recently become aware of their existence. The report shows that 2D barcodes are beating traditional 1D barcodes, such as UPC codes, in popularity. This is due, primarily, to the fact that QR codes are much more dynamic than their counterparts, allowing consumers to gain access to a wealth of digital content by scanning them with their smart phones.
The report draws data from the ScanLife Reporting Platform, which was collected in the fourth quarter of 2011. 2D barcodes accounted for 73% of the codes scanned by consumers in this time, with 1D barcodes accounting for the remaining 27%. The report also shows that QR codes are most popular amongst men between the ages of 25 and 34. The codes are scanned the most from Android mobile devices, with this platform accounting for 50% of all scans. The iPhone trails behind with 39% of scans.
The Consumer Packaged Goods industry – which represents goods that are consumed on a daily basis and replaced frequently – moved to the top spot on the report’s ranking of which industries are using QR codes the most. The codes have been quite successful in this industry as many consumers have been exposed to QR codes simply because they have seen them every day. Via Anise Smith

Anise is THE QR and Barcode expert. I suspect we will all be wanting her advice here soon as QR, web and mobile all mash up into something cool. When in doubt, ask Anise:). Marty

"Today, TED announced the winner of the 2012 TED Prize: the City 2.0. Breaking from their tradition of recognizing an individual global innovator, TED is embracing the concept of crowd-sourcing urbanism (an idea we obviously support at Open Source Cities). The organizers published this call-to-arms in seeking ideas on the City 2.0: “The City 2.0 is the city of the future … a future in which more than 10 billion people on planet Earth must somehow live sustainably, together. The City 2.0 is not a sterile utopian dream, but a real-world upgrade tapping into humanity’s collective wisdom. The City 2.0 promotes innovation, education, culture and economic opportunity. The City 2.0 reduces the carbon footprint of its occupants and eases the environmental pressure on the world’s rural areas. The City 2.0 is a place of beauty, wonder, excitement, inclusion, diversity, life. The City 2.0 is the city that works.”" Via Howard Rheingold, Mohammad Abdelkhalek

Researchers at The Neuro and the University of Maryland have figured out the mathematical calculations that specific neurons employ in order to inform us of our distance from an object and the 3D velocities of moving objects and surfaces relative to ourselves. Highly specialized neurons located in the brain's visual cortex, in an area known as MST, respond selectively to motion patterns such as expansion, rotation, and deformation. However, the computations underlying such selectivity were unknown until now. Via Sakis Koukouvis

Now, researchers from Washington-based company Innovega, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation, are developing novel contact lenses that can help view tiny full-colour megapixel displays. “Over the past months, we have demonstrated contact lens-enabled eyewear for mobile devices, including smart phones, portable game devices and media players that deliver panoramic, high-resolution experiences for entertainment and planned augmented reality applications,” Discovery News quoted Steve Willey, chief executive officer of Bellevue, Innovega as saying. The new system consists of advanced contact lenses working in conjunction with lightweight eyewear. Normally, the human eye is limited in its ability to focus on objects placed very near it.
