Branch and Bound (B&B) algorithms in Global Optimization are used to perform an exhaustive search over the feasible area. One choice is to use simplicial partition sets. Obtaining sharp and cheap bounds of the objective function over a simplex is very important in the construction of efficient Global Optimization B&B algorithms. Although enclosing a simplex in a box implies an overestimation, boxes are more natural when dealing with individual coordinate bounds, and bounding ranges with Interval Arithmetic (IA) is computationally cheap.

The surface quality of the parts is one of the major objectives of the use of the high-speed milling (HSM). Tool path interpolations affect the machining operation of complex parts in HSM. In this paper, the influence of the different types of interpolation of the computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) on the surface roughness in the HSM machining of free forms is studied. To do this, a simulation tool of the surface texture for each type of interpolation is proposed.

Foie gras is a traditional dish in France that contains 50 to 60% of lipids. The high-fat content of the liver improves the organoleptic qualities of foie gras and reduces its technological yield at cooking (TY). As the valorization of the liver as foie gras products is strongly influenced by the TY, classifying the foie gras in their potential technological quality before cooking them is the main challenge for producers. Therefore, the current study aimed to identify hepatic biomarkers of foie gras qualities like liver weight (LW) and TY.

316L austenitic stainless steel was carburized in sodium containing a high-carbon activity at two different temperatures, 500 °C and 600 °C for 1000 h. The carbon profile, carbide mass fraction and residual stress tensor profile were determined using electron probe microanalysis and high-energy X-ray diffraction. The carbon profile and carbides mass fractions were also predicted using a thermodynamic and kinetic modeling tool (DICTRA).

Nowadays, a large part of daily activities is associated with the use of fossil fuels. Therefore, the excessive exploitation and related pollution have led to the search for alternatives. A current alternative to replace them is production of biofuels. They are produced in facilities called biorefineries which are ecodesigned. The ecodesign in biorefineries is a multicriteria issue encountering various criteria. In this context, the aim of this study is the assessment of various biorefinery ecodesign alternatives for the selection of the optimal pathway to produce biodiesel as an alternative to fossil fuels. A multicriteria decision-making methodological framework is proposed and applied to two case studies with three scenarios each.

Several homogeneous photo-based advanced oxidation processes-namely photolysis, photo-oxidation, and photo-Fenton oxidation—were investigated for the elimination of ibuprofen in water. The effects of several operating parameters, such as the lamp type (low or medium pressure mercury, xenon-arc), the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (0.5 to 7 times the stoichiometric amount required for mineralization), and the concentration of Fenton reagent, were quantified.

This article describes the synthesis of a new bio-based organocatalytic surfactant. The nine steps of the synthesis were optimized, fully respecting the principles of green chemistry. The surfactant aspect was then evaluated with the use of tensiometric studies. The molecular organization of the surfactant in vesicles in an aqueous medium was characterized by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and confirmed using Density Functional Theory (DFT) modelling.

Ponds in agricultural areas are ubiquitous water retention systems acting as reactive biogeochemical hotspots controlling pesticide dissipation and transfer at the catchment scale. Several issues need to be addressed in order to understand, follow-up and predict the role of ponds in limiting pesticide transfer at the catchment scale. In this review, we present a critical overview of functional processes underpinning pesticide dissipation in ponds.

The gut microbiota–intestine–liver relationship is emerging as an important factor in multiple hepatic pathologies, but the hepatic sensors and effectors of microbial signals are not well defined. By comparing publicly available liver transcriptomics data from conventional vs. germ-free mice, we identified pregnane X receptor (PXR, NR1I2) transcriptional activity as strongly affected by the absence of gut microbes.

The Cytolethal Distending Toxin (CDT) is a bacterial genotoxin produced by pathogenic bacteria causing major foodborne diseases worldwide. CDT activates the DNA Damage Response and modulates the host immune response, but the precise relationship between these outcomes has not been addressed so far. Here, we show that chronic exposure to CDT in HeLa cells or mouse embryonic fibroblasts promotes a strong type I interferon (IFN) response that depends on the cytoplasmic DNA sensor cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP)-adenosine monophosphate (AMP) synthase (cGAS) through the recognition of micronuclei.

Background Plants perform in a specific Eh–pH spectrum and they rely on various processes to ensure their homeostasis, which plays a central role in their defense. The effects of multiple stresses, all translated into oxidative stress into the plant, and the capacity of the latter to respond to these stresses results in specific Eh–pH states in plants. Scope We reviewed plant-invertebrate pests and plant-pathogens interactions under a Eh–pH homeostasis perspective by extensively analyzing the literature, which converges and supports a set of hypotheses.

Abstract The use of circular economy is becoming more and more important, particularly in the field of agriculture, a major provider of waste. In particular, a lot of researches are being done to transform the lignocellulosic waste from agriculture through desired "sustainable" processes. Sustainable processes mean economically viable, socially accepted, and environmentally responsible processes.

The production of phosphoric acid for use in fertilizer generates toxic fluorosilicic acid as by-product, which can have, when disposed in ocean, negative effects on the maritime ecosystem. With the objective of developing a process for the treatment and valorization of this industrial waste, we study a route starting with a reaction between fluorosilicic acid and sodium chloride that produces a hydrochloric acid solution and sodium fluorosilicate powder. In the present work, we focused on the conversion step of sodium fluorosilicate, consisting of a caustification reaction in an aqueous solvent, with the purpose of obtaining valuable products. We identified a reaction scheme based on a preliminary thermodynamic study using the PHREEQC geochemical software.

In this research, treated metakaolinite (TMK) was introduced into the TiO2 photoelectrode to fabricated dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The photovoltaic cells have four main natural components, i.e., a photosensitizer (carotenoid bixin), photoelectrode (TiO2/kaolinite), electrolyte (glycerine carbonate derivative), and counter-electrode (carbon). Their stability, reusability, and equivalent circuit were studied.

Despite the key importance of the landscape matrix for bats, we still not fully understand how the effect of forest composition interacts at combined stand and landscape scales to shape bat communities. In addition, we lack detailed knowledge on the effects of local habitat structure on bat-prey relationships in forested landscapes. We tested the assumptions that (i) forest composition has interacting effects on bats between stand and landscape scales; and (ii) stand structure mediates prey abundance effects on bat activity.

System substitution can be defined as the capability to replace a system by another one that preserves the specification of the original one. It may be used for reconfiguration in various situations like failure management, maintenance or Web services compensation. When substituting a system at runtime, a key requirement is to correctly restore the state of the substituted one.

The study proposed a feedforward– feedback combined architecture to control a piezoelectric motion system with rate-dependent hysteresis nonlinearities. First, the feedforward control that considered the inverse rate-dependent Prandtl–Ishlinskii (RDPI) model was presented. Based on the inverse RDPI model, a formula that characterizes the output of the inverse compensation considering modeling errors and uncertainties was obtained.
