Got a wicked problem? First, tell me how you make toast

Got a wicked problem? First, tell me how you make toast | Professional Learning Design | Scoop.it
Making toast doesn’t sound very complicated -- until someone asks you to draw the process, step by step. Tom Wujec loves asking people and teams to draw how they make toast, because the process reveals unexpected truths about how we can solve our biggest, most complicated problems at work. Learn how to run this exercise yourself, and hear Wujec’s surprising insights from watching thousands of people draw toast.
Steve Whitmore's insight:

This video seems like it would be appropriate to show to adults and teenagers to talk about problem-solving. I never realized that making toast could be culturally sensitive!

Making Teacher Professional Development Decisions Based on Program Effectiveness

Making Teacher Professional Development Decisions Based on Program Effectiveness | Professional Learning Design | Scoop.it

HoIf the professional development experienced by teachers simply exposes teachers to new concepts that are never implemented, time and money is being squandered. Push for hard data on the impact of professional development programs.

Steve Whitmore's insight:

"What do we need?" is the key question when choosing Professional Development.  SSW's are good about choosing OS events to assist them in increasing skills and knowledge.  However, if administration is not on the same page as the PD, then many times the participants feel that it's just a compliance activity.

How to Create a Powerpoint Presentation that Won't Put People to Sleep [Infographic] | Daily Infographic

How to Create a Powerpoint Presentation that Won't Put People to Sleep [Infographic] | Daily Infographic | Professional Learning Design | Scoop.it

Before a presentation your nerves become fired up and your heart starts to pound.  While the audience may be sizing you up, they are only hoping for an engaging presentation. They want you to succeed and quite frankly they need you to succeed. The infographic provided by Udemy walks us through the three critical points to creating a great presentation.

Content provides the bulk of your presentation. It should remain clear, crisp, and current. The audience expects to feel plugged in to what you are presenting. While your ideas and information may seem sufficient to you, you ought to confer with a colleague or friend to ensure that what you plan to provide will be well received.

However captivating your presence may be, visuals always help to reinforce spoken information. Undoubtedly, we live in a time where animation has never been more advanced, but keep your visuals simple and straightforward. The majority of the focus should be on you rather than on your slideshow design.

Some good ideas are included in this infographic.

A Guide to Proficiency Based Professional Development (EdSurge News)

A Guide to Proficiency Based Professional Development (EdSurge News) | Professional Learning Design | Scoop.it

I work in a small Maine city-district that takes its innovations seriously! We were an early adopter of middle school and high school 1-to-1 devices in Maine, and one of the first districts in the country to go 1-to-1 with ipads in primary grades. Added to that, we are trying to meet the needs of all students through proficiency-based, customized learning.

So it is no surprise that we have been thinking a little differently about professional development lately.

Some good considerations in designing professional learning. Collaborative conversations are always helpful in any aspect of education.
