Safety and health at work – Factsheets on various carcinogens now available online | EU-OSHA

Safety and health at work – Factsheets on various carcinogens now available online | EU-OSHA | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it

The roadmap on carcinogens published 10 ready-to-use factsheets on asbestos, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS), vinyl chloride, chromium VI, hardwood dust, welding fumes, silica dust, diesel engine exhaust, and benzene.

In the factsheets, attention is paid to the risks, the substance itself, the symptoms and what possible actions could be to lessen the risk of exposure.

What is Asbestos? | HSI Magazine

What is Asbestos? | HSI Magazine | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it

Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals that can be separated into fibres that are strong and durable, as well as being resistant to heat and fire. The fibres can also be long, thin and supple, meaning it is possible for them to be woven into cloth. With asbestos being so multifunctional, it was used as insulation and as a heat resistant material in buildings until the year 2000.

Roadmap on Carcinogens

Roadmap on Carcinogens | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it

In the EU, annually more than 100.000 people die because of work-related cancer. Exposure to carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) in the workplace is a main contributing factor to these deaths. In fact, exposure to the carcinogen asbestos is the leading cause of deaths due to occupational cancer today.

IARC Monographs: Some Organophosphate Insecticides and Herbicides

IARC Monographs: Some Organophosphate Insecticides and Herbicides | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it
This volume of the IARC Monographs provides evaluations of the carcinogenicity of some organophosphate insecticides and herbicides, including diazinon, glyphosate, malathion, parathion, and tetrachlorvinphos.

Diazinon acts on a wide range of insects on crops, gardens, livestock, and pets, but most uses have been restricted in the USA, Canada, and the European Union since the 1980s. Glyphosate is the most heavily used agricultural and residential herbicide in the world, and has been detected in soil, air, surface water, and groundwater, as well as in food. Malathion is one of the oldest and most widely used organophosphate insecticides, and has a broad spectrum of applications in agriculture and public health, notably mosquito control. The insecticide parathion has been largely banned or restricted throughout the world due to toxicity to wildlife and humans. Tetrachlorvinphos is banned in the European Union, but continues to be used in the USA and elsewhere as an insecticide on animals, including in pet flea collars.

The IARC Monographs Working Group reviewed epidemiological evidence, animal bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to humans of these agents.

Diesel fuels are cancerogenic: workers need to be protected | European Trade Union Institute

Diesel fuels are cancerogenic: workers need to be protected | European Trade Union Institute | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it

On 10 January, the European Commission published its second draft of the revised Directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens or mutagens at work. The omission of diesel engine exhaust from this draft has prompted criticism by the European trade union movement.
