How to Prime Your Mind for Optimism

How to Prime Your Mind for Optimism | Positive Psychology | Scoop.it
We can shift our mindset toward more optimism and happiness.
Sarah Rivas's curator insight, March 12, 2021 10:02 AM
While the writer saw a flat tire situation as a major problem, her boyfriend saw it as a minor inconvenience. Positive attitudes and perspectives shape how you view everything in life. I agree wholeheartedly with the statement that the author makes when she said "My more pessimistic outlook simply led me to suffer and feel helpless". Being pessimistic isn't helping you become a realist or keeping you safe from being let down by others. It is simply taking away your happiness and health. The study in this article shows that people ages 40 to 90 tended to live longer if they were more optimistic—even taking into account other factors, like their diet, smoking, alcohol use, depression, and other health conditions. The good news is you can still change your mindset. The five research based strategies for changing your mindset is:
1. Reframe stressors
2. Practice self-compassion
3. Let it go
4. Avoid comparisons and practice gratitude instead
5.  Find some (any) humor
I can attest that these five steps to changing your mindset truly work. I practice doing these five steps every day and I find that it not only has become easier to change my perspective on stressors but it's easier now to let go of comparing what I have to what others have and be grateful for all that I already have. I also think that finding humor in the things that are hard or stressful lightens the load and heaviness of life. It's okay to laugh at yourself sometimes. You don't have to take life so seriously!

The Neuroscience of Building a Resilient Brain

The Neuroscience of Building a Resilient Brain | Positive Psychology | Scoop.it
Having a resilient brain is about how well your brain handles stress. Developing resiliency is a neuroplastic process your brain can learn.
Sarah Rivas's curator insight, March 12, 2021 10:13 AM
Everyone goes through really hard things in life. Resilience is not inherited and the ability to get back up after you fall down in life is actually developed through major pain, trauma and sadness in life. Resilience is built over time through behaviors, thoughts, and actions that are learned and developed. So switching from a negative mindset to a positive one or overcoming major obstacles in life is only a matter of your brains Neuroplastic Process.
To sum it up here are some ways you can increase resilience:
1. Make connections.
2. Avoid seeing crises as insurmountable problems.
3. Accept that change is a part of living.
4. Move toward your goals.
5. Take decisive actions.
6. Look for opportunities for self-discovery.
7. Nurture a positive view of yourself.
8. Keep things in perspective.
9. Maintain a hopeful outlook.
10. Take care of yourself.

What’s the Difference Between Mindfulness and Meditation? | DOYOUYOGA

What’s the Difference Between Mindfulness and Meditation? | DOYOUYOGA | Positive Psychology | Scoop.it
It's one of the most popular questions we get: is there a difference between mindfulness and meditation? If so, what is it? Find out here.
Sarah Rivas's curator insight, March 12, 2021 10:29 AM
Many times people ask me what mindfulness and meditation is and how it helps you become more positive mentally. Meditation is a practice of transforming the mind intentionally to promote calmness, concentration and emotional balance. Meditation is more so focusing on your breath and pushing away any thoughts about the future or the past and just focusing on your breathing and just being. Mindfulness is asking yourself questions about how you are feeling to check in with yourself and make sure everything that you are taking part in is bringing you joy. If not, you can work towards getting rid of the things that are bringing you down or changing the way you look at the situation to start bringing yourself joy through it. Like work for example, you may not be able to quit or change your career but you can change your perspective on how you perceive work and you can intentionally commit yourself to planting positive thoughts into your mind about stressful work in order to rewire your brain to start actually liking the things you once hated doing. A positive mindset all starts with what you are saying to yourself and how you are perceiving the things around you. This article highlights the benefits of both meditation and mindfulness, as well as highlights the benefits of both. When I started practicing mindfulness in every area of my life- I found myself happier and appreciative of all the things I am able to do.
