Eric Maisel on meaning in art to manage depression | TalentDevelop

Eric Maisel on meaning in art to manage depression | TalentDevelop | Playfulness | Scoop.it

Eric Maisel: “When we fear that we do not matter or that our efforts do not matter, we get depressed.

“Similarly, the places where we make large investments of meaning, for instance in our performances, paintings, or books, are places of great anxiety, because there is more than our ego on the line, there is our very sense of the meaningfulness of our life.

“If the world is not interested in our paintings, for instance, we will be hard-pressed to maintain meaning there; so, when we come to the blank canvas, we can already be a little (or a lot) frightened that a negative reaction to this as-yet-unborn painting will precipitate a meaning crisis.”

StateOfPlayFeb2010.pdf

Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

This is summary of findings from a gallop poll of school principals and their feelings on play. Very interesting findings...

"A new, first-of-its-kind Gallup poll reveals that elementary
school principals overwhelmingly believe recess has a positive
impact not only on the development of students’ social skills,
but also on achievement and learning in the classroom.
These findings arrive on the heels of groundbreaking research
linking more recess to better behavior and focus in the
classroom."

Play, Creativity, and Learning: Why Play Matters for Kids and Adults

Play, Creativity, and Learning: Why Play Matters for Kids and Adults | Playfulness | Scoop.it
Learn about the lifelong benefits of play, including greater creativity, happiness, and productivity.

Via Jennifer Hoffmaster Christian
Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

"Play is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships fresh and exciting. Playing together for the fun of it brings joy, vitality, and resilience to relationships. Play can also heal resentments, disagreements, and hurts. Through regular play, we learn to trust one another and feel safe. Trust enables us to work together, open ourselves to intimacy, and try new things. By making a conscious effort to incorporate more humor and play into your daily interactions, you can improve the quality of your love relationships- as well as your connections with co-workers, family members, and friends."

Benefits of Laughter

Benefits of Laughter: Angels fly because they take themselves lightly. (G.K. Chesterton)

Via Happiness Blueprint
Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

This article sumarizes "laughter therapy" research and outlines the many benfits of laughter.

"William Fry, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Stanford University Medical School and expert on health and laughter, reports the average kindergarten student laughs 300 times a day. Yet, adults average just 17 laughs a day. Why the difference? Are we too uptight, too tense? Do we take life too seriously? Isn't it time we learned how to relax? We don't stop laughing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop laughing. So, if we want to fly like the angels and share in their happiness, we'll have to follow their example and take ourselves lightly."

Ha! Ha!

World Refugee Day in Thailand...with the Right to Play

World Refugee Day in Thailand...with the Right to Play | Playfulness | Scoop.it

Former Thailand Premier League footballer Maruyama Yoshiaki helped Right To Play commemorate World Refugee Day in the country’s Umpium Refugee Camp on Thursday.

Right To Play believes in the power of play as a catalyst for change and as a positive force in the lives of at-risk children and youth. In 2012, we reached about 43,000 children in refugee-focused programs. Events like the one held today in Umpium help Right To Play make positive change in refugee camps around the world.

Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

Very cool story about the "Right to Play's" commitment to take the right to play to refugees in Thailand.
