A new tiny camera captures better-than-HD video. The latest device from Point Grey is an “in an ice-cube sized, low-cost package,” says the British Columbia-base industrial camera maker.
The FL3-U3-88S2C captures 4,096 x 2,160 video with an 8.8 megapixel Sony IMX1221 Exmor R sensor. “The impressive 4K2K resolution combined with the ease of USB 3.0 and the camera’s small size makes the new Flea3 suitable for a variety of high resolution color applications including automatic optical inspection, ophthalmology, interactive multimedia, and broadcast,” the company says.
The Flea3 camera measures 29 x 29 x 30mm, and uses USB 3 connectivity. It is $945.

ZangZing will close soon after MobileMe

ZangZing will close soon after MobileMe | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it

ZangZing had been cleverly standing out as a possible "after MobileMe" solution for those who cannot wait for iOS6 "share from Photostream" feature unveiled at WWDC.

Joseph Ansanelli's team had designed a superior user interface, a clever ingestion mechanism including fetching albums from other sites, along with comprehensive privacy settings while sharing albums with others.

The email below is therefore a total surprise for subscribers as well as a strong disappointment, and we don't understand yet what motivated it.

Now that two consumer photosharing services are gone, which of the remaining ones will stand out and take care of the rest of us ?

--

Hi Philippe,

Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share.

On July 2nd, ZangZing will no longer accept new users to join or new photos to be uploaded.

On August 31st, we will be shutting down ZangZing and permanently deleting all photos, contact information, and account information.

To download your original photos, please follow these steps:
Sign in at www.zangzing.com/signinMouse-over the album you would like to downloadClick the "i" menu and choose Download. This will create a Zip file of all the original photos in that album. Once each album is completely downloaded, then begin the next album download as simultaneous downloads can become corrupted on some web browsersRepeat this for all your albums

If you have any problems, please refer to this Help article, http://zan.gy/Gzv1Qd.

Thank you for sharing our same passion for design, privacy, and group photo sharing. You inspired us.

The ZangZing Team

·       Photo and Video apps priced at the minimum store level of $0.99 are more common among top ranking apps introduced in the last 180 days than among older apps

·       iPad and iPhone Photo and Video apps that offer in-app purchasing options receive lower user ratings than those without

·       within the rankings of Photo and Video apps downloaded on iPads, apps that are only available on iPads offer less often photo enhancement functions than those that are also available on iPhones

Woven let's you view photos from multiple sites on an iPad | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it

The Woven photo viewer lets you see in one app all your photos on various online sharing services such as Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and Shutterfly .
Woven aggregates and organizes users’ photos from multiple online storage services onto their preferred mobile devices, developer littl llc says. “With personal photo collections increasingly spread across multiple hard drives, phones, tablets and online storage services, just organizing them for viewing can be a headache. New solutions are needed to reduce this burden on families, simplify the rediscovery of special memories, and bring more joy to photography.”

“Taking photos is only half the work,” says developer C² Enterprises. “Sorting, organizing, and sharing are every bit as important – but they’re also a chore.” With Photosmith on the iPad, “you can do it as easily in a crowded train as on your couch, or a beach-side hammock.”
What’s more, the app is designed to automatically synchronize with Adobe’s Lightroom software running on a full desktop PC or Mac. “When you get back to your computer, it’s a matter of two taps to synchronize it all back to Lightroom,” C²  says.

Solar eclipse picture: a partial eclipse over Colorado

Solar eclipse picture: a partial eclipse over Colorado | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it

An observer in Colorado stands framed by a partial solar eclipse in a picture taken last week and submitted to National Geographic's My Shot.

Solar eclipses happen when the moon lines up between Earth and the sun. But in the most recent case, known as an annular eclipse, the dark moon's apparent diameter was smaller than the visible disk of the sun, so that it left a ring—or annulus—of fiery light around the edges.

The event was the first annular eclipse seen from the mainland United States since 1994.

The Ratio Of PCs To Macs Sold Has Fallen To Levels Not Seen Since The 1990s

The Ratio Of PCs To Macs Sold Has Fallen To Levels Not Seen Since The 1990s | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it

It's important to note that this chart only shows PCs vs. Macs--full-fledged computers that Apple actually doesn't sell that many of. (Mac sales are growing nicely, in stark contrast to the PC market, but they aren't blowing any doors off).

If the chart included sales of iPhones and iPads, the ratio of PCs sold to Apple products sold would look quite different. And given that the distinction between "a PC" and a tablet or smartphone is becoming ever more blurred, the latter chart would actually be more meaningful.

B&W new Leica camera

B&W new Leica camera | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it
The trade-off: greater sensitivity. The company says the rangefinder’s full-frame 18-megapixel monochromatic sensor isn’t burdened with the color filter array and anti-aliasing filter other cameras have atop their sensors, and so is “capable of producing extraordinarily detailed black-and-white photographs with no Bayer interpolation. The sensor does not ‘see’ colors, Leica says, and so every pixel records true luminance values. The lack of a CFA also means that the sensor is significantly more sensitive to light, resulting in an ability to produce unusually clean image files at sensitivity settings up to ISO 10,000.”
The $7950 camera has a one-piece magnesium alloy housing, and the components and shutter assembly “are similarly constructed with a view to a lifetime of endurance. For photographers, this provides absolute reliability over decades of use,” Leica says.
