Osteopathy and Pilates are two different methods to treat muscular skeleton complaints amongst other issues. Osteopathy falls under the banner of manual therapy in Barcelona and Pilates tends to fall under the banner of physical exercise and rehabilitation. Although they are very different techniques in how the treatment is carried out, these two methods have a lot in common.

One of the main similarity is that both Structural Osteopathy and Clinical Pilates view the body holistically and manage injury prevention and rehabilitation treating the body as a whole rather than treating a specific area. Both osteopaths and Pilate’s instructors must have a good understanding of the anatomy and bio mechanics to be able to perform their roles.

Osteopathy and Pilates use optimal movement to create new body memory and improve overall wellness. These newly learnt ways of moving have a direct effect on the body to reduce pain, manage pain and stress, improve movement and awaken muscles that have become dormant.

It is recommended to combine Osteopathy and Pilates for quick and effective recovery. As a Pilate’s instructor I often choose Pilates exercises for my students and find that the students cannot performed them correctly as part of the body is blocked or misaligned. For example; if a student lifts his or her arm above the head and the shoulder is blocked the shoulder will use an incorrect muscle chain to facilitate this movement. A blocked shoulder, staying with this example, may also provoke other structural elements such as the shoulder blade or collar bone to engage when it is not necessary. Until these joints are unblock any misalignments cannot be properly corrected.

This is where osteopathy steps in. By using massage, mobility techniques and impulse, an osteopath can unblock or realign the joint allowing for freedom of movement and the correct muscle chain can be activated for each action. Osteopathy identifies the “weak link” and works to reactive it.

Osteopathy and Pilates have become popular techniques in their own right during more recent years and are often recommend by doctors as a form of rehabilitation. This increase in popularity can be attributed to life as we know it. The comforts and lifestyle of living in the twentieth century with all its conveniences which has a negative effect on our bodies. 

As an Osteopath in Barcelona, as well as a Pilate’s instructor in Barcelona I normally see people walking into my Pilate’s studio and Osteopathy Barcelona clinic when they are in pain and in need treatment to correct issues that have occurred from illness or more often than not our modern comforts and lifestyle

For example; a common cause for many injuries are due to postural imbalance. Postural imbalance can be caused by a many reasons but one of the main causes is the amount of time we spend sitting. Whether that is because we are working with a computer, sitting on a train or car or watching TV. We sit for long periods of time for different activities. The majority of the population forget to hold themselves correctly when sitting or simply don’t have the right shape or size of chair to support them. In addition many people don’t take the aches and pains seriously at first which over time leads to the body deactivated certain muscles, the fascia hardens and muscular tension occurs.

Pilate’s classes are everywhere and are used as a form of staying fit as well as for rehabilitation. Fitness Pilates as well as Rehabilitation Pilates classes both use the same exercises.

There are approximately 50 Pilates exercise in the Pilates method though many people consider there to be more as each of the 50 exercises can be modified to be easier or harder depending on the objective of the class.

The exercises are repeated 8 to 10 times to generate muscle strength and endurance without exhausting or damaging muscle fibers. The exercises also focus on improving flexibility and re-aligning the body’s structure improving balance and posture as well as improving movement and co-ordination.

Head or cervical placement, Shoulder stability, rib cage placement, hip stability and breathing technique. The position of the body adapts to the exercises but conforms to the standard. 

The breathing technique is paramount to carrying out Pilates exercise correctly. The breathing technique contracts the traverse muscles which is a core muscle that stabilities the lumbar – pelvic region amongst other functions. Research by Porterfield and DeRosa has shown that forced exhalation during exercise can reduce the sensation of fatigue and effort.
